Xiaomi launched a new handset in the Mi Max series in India here is the Mi Max 2 review. Max 2 is big, comes with big screen, powerful processor, big RAM, big Storage and big battery of 5300 mAh capacity. The only thing small on this handset is the price of Rs. 16,999.

This Mi Max 2 is successor to the Mi Max. Both are big handsets made for users who prefer using a big device with big screen but comfortable enough to be used like a phone. The Mi Max 2 is a perfect device that fits between a tablet and a smartphone and in fact it is better than tablet as well as better than a smartphone.

Mi Max 2 is powerful, packed with good RAM and big storage (64GB ROM), plus there is micro SD card support in case you want extra storage. Performance is very smooth and handset hardly heats up. Body is slim but the size is big, however comfortable to hold but to operate you will need to use both your hands – in most cases.

Mi Max 2 review

There is finger print sensor for additional security and IR blaster that can be used to control your electronic devices (TV, AC etc). Camera is excellent, this Mi Max 2 is using 12MP primary camera with SONY IMX386 sensor that does an excellent job.

Mi Max 2 6.44 inch 2.5D FHD screen

There is nothing to complain about on the Mi Max 2, even battery life is amazing. The only thing that is small is the price, just about perfect.

Mi Max 2 Gaming Review

I installed and played Asphalt 8 in high quality mode and Modern Combat 5. Both games were playable, very smooth no lags. The gaming experience was different and much better cause of a bigger screen. Also touch area increased cause of bigger screen that also helps in games like modern combat 5 – for better accuracy.

Mi Max 2 Camera  Review

Rear Camera : 12MP, f/2.2, Large 1.25μm pixels, SONY IMX386 sensor, dual tone LED flash
Front Camera : 5MP, f/2.0
Video Recording : Max 4K resolution, 720p slow motion, time-lapse

The camera quality on the Mi Max 2 is excellent. The auto mode works perfect and in extreme low light if you switch to manual mode then the output will be even better. Front camera quality is also pretty good. If you compare the images taken with Mi Max 2 with Redmi 4 the quality on Mi Max 2 is better.

This handset can shoot 4K videos, video quality is pretty good, however cause of big size it may get difficult at times to shoot with one hand.

Camera Rating : 4.2 out of 5

There is finger print sensor on the back, its fast and accurate. Mi Max 2 comes with dual speakers, one speaker is at the bottom and the other is at same location as the in-call speaker. You do get stereo effects but the volume of the left speaker (in-call location) is much lower compared with the primary speaker – check video review to hear the difference.

Mi Max 2 comes with host of features like second space, dual apps, reading mode etc.

Battery Temp at idle : 29 degrees
Running Benchmark app :
 16 minutes / 2% / 33 degrees
Asphalt 8 + MC5 game play : 24 minutes / 5% / 34 degrees
4K video playback with full brightness (WiFi /4G on) :  61 minutes / 10% / 34 degrees

Verdict

Excellent smartphone or call it a phablet, its powerful, does not heat up, camera is excellent and so is the battery life. The only thing to consider is the size, since this is big and if you are comfortable using it then there is no better option in this phablet category. Those who are already using the Mi Max can upgrade if required.

Rating : 4.5 out of 5

Mi Max 2 price in India is Rs. 16,999 with 4GB RAM and 64GB Storage (next sale on 27th July).

  1. I’m a gaming person and i want to play mc5 with no lag, Can you assure sir that it is good for playing games especially mc5? That, based on other reviews it lag when it comes to online multiplayer games,

I’m planning to buy this one.

Thank you sir, i just want to be guided based on your experience in using the device.

  2. I need clarification. Is ppi 342 in mi max 2 sufficient for crisp and detailed view?
    pl explain the reason.

    1. I just bought Mi Max 2 (32gb version @12999/-) http://amzn.to/2fIX7lG , everything is good but after using Asus Zenfone 3, LG Q6 and Samsung Galaxy S7, I feel display is not up to the mark considering the Screen size (6.44″). It should be Full HD + just like LG Q6… Pixel should be more.. But phone is slim and inspite of 5300 mAh battery and big screen, it doesn’t feel bulky. Shound quality on speaker is very good due to its dual stereo speakers.

  3. Goji Ji.. Most of the people in Flipkart and Amazon are saying camera is poor and front camera is very bad. I am surprised, as you mentioned this camera as excellent. Please tell any particular reason for this or any specific mode to handle the camera? I am planning to buy this but only this point i am concerned. Please reply.

  4. Camera sensor is very good but a improper software optimisation takes a average quality images with an auto mode. Better to use manual mode or use a google camera.

    1. gogi bro please add few more indoor image samples like from both front and rear camera. I don’t agree camera quality be excellent in manual mode also. The front camera quality is poor unusable images indoor.Same goes for back camera outdoor its good, indoor its ok, low light it’s not that good. BECAUSE I have redmi note4 and I compared its image quality to my newly bought mi max 2 both auto mode and manual setting, HDR, HHT shots and found that redmi note 4 captured images with better quality than mi max 2 in the indoor and low light. Only good thing about mi max 2 is probably little faster focusing than note4 and accurate color. So, my conclusion the camera quality of mi max 2 is just about average / above average it cant be excellent if compared with phones. maybe in the phablet category it is good.

  5. Gogi sir, mi max 2 camera bokeh effect background blur support karta hai Ki nhi? Plz fatafat boliye abhi Qki abhi flipkart sale pe buy karna hai.

  6. Gogi Sir, i am using mimax 2 with a tempered screenguard which doesnt look good. I want to know if you are still using mimax2 without screenguard, are there any scratches till now? because planning to remove it..

    1. Even if you use Gorilla glass eventually you will get very mild scratches, no matter how careful you might be. That is normal and the scratches are not easily visible, only under certain angles and if you look closely you will see them to avoid that you can use a scratch guard. But as I said they are not easily visible, so up to you.

      1. thank you sir for prompt reply!!
but it does increase my doubts more ? I will order a fullscreen tempered glass from aliexpress then..

  7. Gogi, just check for these in this handset.
How is the music output from audio jack when compared to Bluetooth.
Connect to any Bluetooth speaker/earphones and let us know.
This is one of the issues I observed along with not so smooth touch screen response!!

    1. I use every handset, I watch videos, play music, etc no issues. I do a lot of test makes no sense putting all the details as it will get boring. If there is any specific issue I will highlight otherwise assume there is no issue. Every handset that i review I use it like my primary phone, which means I use BT when walking, I also use wired earphone for watching movies etc.

      1. Bro, why I asked is, I am using Mi Max 1 in which we have all these issues. I have replaced two phone’s for this reason but had to settle for it’s VFM and bought it third time!!
Most of the times i use Bluetooth for voice and music streaming. But yes, the music output will be more enjoyable only through audio jack with many music effects.

I was trying to buy Mi Max 2, if it doesn’t have these issues.
        Hope you understand the point.

        1. The problem could be with the Bluetooth device. Did you try checking with some other BT device?

          1. Yes bro, I did.
I have Bluetooth speakers as well as ear phones.
For example. When I directly connect ear phones through 3.5 mm jack, the volume is comparatively low (<60%) when it's played over Bluetooth with the same earphones attached to it!!

I have tested on Phillips and JBL Bluetooth speakers as well. The same thing happens with them also!!!
I gave the same comments in my Amazon review and also informed Mi India.
All three phones had the same issue, hence I thought it's a hardware issue.
It will be great if you can check this once.
            Thank Gogi bro.

          2. By the by, I am using Sony Bluetooth earphone (SBH50).
And the same thing is not happening with any of my other phones Samsung Note 2, Mi3, Rn3 etc.

    2. I got qcy q8 Bluetooth earphones and the sound is excellent when connected to mi max 2.

      1. its definitely big but a delight to use.. earlier i used samsung note 8 which will not fit in pocket and am happy this fits.i actually bought it for its big screen and 2 day battery only

      2. or are you asking about qcy q8??
its big but sound is awesome. i feel any wireless earphones shud have minimum 5hrs battery and this does give more than it

    3. Hi,
How is the sound quality/bass in earphones?
Does this phone have Dirac sound system?

      Plz let me know.

  8. Gogi Bro,

Would u recommend Galaxy J7 Pro 2017 as alternate against this MI Max 2?

There is only 3k difference between the 2 and I prefer good service after sales which Samsung excels well.

    Please advise

      1. Hi Harsh,

The intention here is when we are spending around 17-20K on a phone, we should have proper service center in case of any issue on new handset if any and Samsung is good in that area post sales.

        1. Xiaomi has 500 service centres and belive me i m using redmi 1s and mi max using from last 3-4 years first the redmi 1s and then mi max from last 10 months; i havent ever visited the service centre.. though i was worried when i bought redmi 1s as service centre was 60kms away from my town but when i used and got a reliable product it never stuck in my mind that whether i should buy mi max or not due to service centre.. and recently i purchased mi 10000mah powerbank 2 and noticed on their website that there are 500+ service centres in India till date and when i checked for my town Jalandhar – Punjab i was pretty happy that now there are two sevice centres.. and your caution for service centre arised just becausr you know samsung has service centres available but you dont know if mi has or not… but literally when you have a samsung phone you must be worried of a SC coz i have faced this… i had samsung s53** dous or something prioir to redmi1s and i used that phone for exactly 12 months and i swear i got it fixed atleast 12 times and that too with such botheration. I had to wait for more than 2 hours to complaint and the. 2 hours wait to get the phone everytime it was fixed… so samsung is just no otherthan bull***t.. i never considered to buy samsung.. and you know what there are atleast 20-25 mi phones people are using who are acquainted to me they asked me i suggested them and here they go.. samsung is complete bull**t.

  9. Gogi Sir, Mobile is over all very good as per your review. But price is not justified.

  10. Greate device for media consumption and gaming. thermal control is very impressive at just 35 degrees, superb battery life. For 17k Can’t ask for more.

  11. X”llent review as usual, really gogi”ji style, neat and perfect. Million thanks for u r efforts and for ur solutions to Indian customers. Plz clear the following doubts gogi sir.

    1. Some initial sets of this model internationally lacks of support one 4G band, now at xiaomi India website it seems this one supports all, particularly Reliance Jio 4G bands as it mentioned there. So plz clear the doubt of weather it supports all Reliance jio bands and there is no disconnect and connect again frequently while switching between bands. U also mentioned that it supports 4G on both Sims, so 2 jio Sims with 4G, works same time or not?

    2. Both the speakers are not producing same levels of sound, u already said top one with low sound already, just want to know that more clear again about it,,, top one is restricted to low and mid only and below one is only for high frequencies Means only 1 speaker splits into 2,,,

Howz the output via earphones, particularly about BASS Punch when used with high end BASS earphones,,,,, it it satisfies the audiophiles who love thunder bass punchiness?

Plz review more about sound only coz this phab is top choice for more interested consumers like me who likes sound after big screen than cam and other features.

    3. SAR values seems to high, so is it SAFE?

Awaiting for u r review about these points,,, million thanks for ur gr8 reviews gogi sir.

    1. Answer for first question. No. No chance to use two rjio Sims. Chip set doesn’t support that.

    2. See this
“The SAR for GSM simultaneous transmission (cellular plus Wi-Fi) iPhone 7 Plus is 1.42 w/kg next to your head, 1.54 w/kg when worn on the body, and 1.54 w/kg when used as a hotspot.”
      From rfsafe.com

No reason to worry as long as sar value is below limit.

  12. Gogi bro.. great review. Camera aperture is 2.2. I believe 1.7 aperture shoots best images. Most budget smartphone for with 2.0 aperture. As per you, what caused the camera to be excellent despite 2.2 aperture bro.

    1. Yes Gogi ji, aperture is 2.2 and still the camera is excellent??? Hows this possible!!! Is there any software trick ??? How the pictures clicked are excellent?? Please clear our doubts. No other revievers have rated the camera as good !!!!! I am not doubted on your review but still it’s a surprise package.

      1. Because of Sony IMX386 sensor which is enhanced for low-light photography, also its Large 1.25μm pixels. If it had 2.0 aperture the auto mode would have been as good as manual one.

      2. It’s the same sensor used in mi6….its very capable in low light. camera software optimisation plays vital role in getting good pics in low light even with f 2.2 aperture.

  13. Thanks for the review Gogi… How was the call quality (Earpiece volume) on normal networks and on VoLTE?

How was the Signal stability and GPS accuracy?

Somewhere in other reviews online I have seen that while shooting videos the recorded audio was on the lower side (very low infact)? Please confirm.

    1. If u check the sample in my video review sound is low but not that low. And that can be fixed via software update. Call quality is good, no issues. When recording videos make sure not to block the primary mic at the bottom, that is what most people would accidentally do, cause the phone is big.

  14. In every other review they are saying camera is good in daylight but low light photography is pathetic.. you haven’t said anything about low light photography..please add your comment about low light photography.

    1. Pls read my review and check sample images / watch the video. Check the sample shots they are all shot with Max 2. Read the camera section in case you missed out, auto mode in low light is good or can get bad based on light conditions, but if you use manual mode and manually set some of the settings output is great.

    2. Sunny that is the reason why I follow gogi, he has good knowledge of photography. There are many reviewers out there hardly anyone good at photography, hint look at the kind of videos they create and look at gogi’s video quality.

Hence my friend ignore what other say about photography, its not everyone’s cup of cake. So avoid those reviewers it will only confuse you. And I don’t understand why you are questioning gogi, he has attached the sample images, download it and check for yourself (this is the best thing I like about gogi).

  15. I am using mi max. It’s big, but not uncomfortable. I highly recommend this for people with large hands. Believe me, its easily manageable. I have attached the hybrid Sim slot extender from amazon. Using both Sims +SD card. Working perfectly. No issues at all.
This upgraded version will be even more bang for the buck. But older one is also equally good with huge battery backup though 4850.
Being slimmer, it gets easy to handle.
Its way better than other smaller screen phones, I believe. So, those equipped with big hands should definitely go for this over note 4,redmi 4 etc.
Its sheer joy watching movies, reading, browsingl, playing games, though I ain’t a big fan of games.
Call quality superb. No heating at all though SD 650. Fast.

  16. Led notification: yes, no option to change colour.
    ??????????
Miui can change colour of notification led.
    Please correct Sir.

    1. Redmi 4 and Mi max 2 don’t give users to change led notification light colour….
There is no option in settings, please watch video review..

Well gogi bro, then how we get to know that it’s fully charged…

As in RN3 led colour changes to green when it reacges above 90% charge and led gets off when battery is fully charged…

      1. When it is fully charged the charging stops. LED I guess goes out I am still waiting for a full discharge :-), not really using the phone now but just running movies.

        1. In redmi note 4 .. u have options to charge led light, can assign diff colour for each function

  17. Gogi if u compare moto g5 plus camera and mi max 2 camera …which is better in low light … and overall camera…

    1. I have rated both these as excellent, and in manual mode they shoot really good in low light. Having said that G5 Plus is easy to handle cause of size whereas Max 2 is not that easy. I don’t have the G5 Plus now otherwise I would have compared same shot in same conditions but if you look at the night shots they are much sharper on Max 2.

      1. Gogi bro please add 3 extra images in your future camera reviews so we will get a much better idea about camera quality.please add indoor image quality in auto mode for both front and rear camera & against the direct light source.

  18. Hmesha ki trh bht acha review..
Mujhe lgta h phone ache hote h miui updates use bekar krte jate h

  19. Lenovo p2 is better, specially for the size effect. In day to day life, its not comfortable while handling. 6 inch should have been better.

    1. No software updates. Buggy os. AVG camera.
Only good thing p2 has is smiled display, that battery.

    1. I doubt if they will cause I don’t think they mentioned 128GB at launch event.

  20. Awesome phone, awesome pricing, awesome review. Xiaomi have nailed it this time also.
