On the 83rd birth Anniversary of Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani, yesterday, RIL launched their 4G services called JIO for its 1 Lakh plus employees and their families. It is still not known when the RIL JIO services will be rolled out to general users, but might happen soon probably early 2016.
Reliance JIO have acquired 800MHz (10 circles), 1800MHz and 2300MHz spectrum (14 circles). They faced some technical issues with 2300 spectrum and hence the 4G launch was delayed. However for now 4G is available for Reliance employees and their families and soon will be rolled out commercially.
By making 4G services available for employees and business partners, the company will make optimal use of human resources to check the system performance, make it perfect before the commercial launch.
Mobile companies paying several thousands of Crores to Govt for spectrum, companies losing revenue from sms, mms, & now even calls with call services from fb, Whatsapp etc. So in future these companies slowly becoming mobile Internet only providers. When lose call, sms, mms etc revenue to apps which doesn’t spend a single buck here for spectrum & infrastructure, companies have to get their money back from only mobile Internet services means Internet going to be very expensive. Net neutrality people won’t allow control over fb, Whatsapp calls, nor do they allow Internet org alias freebasics services. So no hopes for saving few MBs there too.
@Anilkerala: They are already getting tons and tons of crores from Data Revenues.A company can earn profit by nominal price hikes but it’s totally wrong wen a comes goes over greedy likewise FraudTel which will definitely fall in the long run. There should be some ethics in business then only a company can survive otherwise at certain point of time their mistakes will lead them to fall.Regarding Net Neutrality first r u ready to Activate various packs like Whatsapp pack,fb pack, google packs, third party website packs even though u hav Data balance?? ?Think about the poor people who can’t afford food and so on,where such Data price hikes would definitely hit everyone.
I don’t know how you can conclude that the internet will become more expensive if all companies are going to concentrate on that. If anything, voice calls will become more costly.
Actually I think there will be a solution for that as well, namely internet telephony. At the moment, there is one service of reasonable bandwidth, namely BSNL EVDO which offers unlimited data at a bandwidth of about 1-2 mb/s for under 1 k per month. But in future, I think that there will be several such services. And internet telephony will come along with that package. For these low cost low-bandwidth packages, they may force you to get annual plans but the data plan will be unlimited and the telephony plan included will be practically unlimited. That will be the mobile telephony of the future
I also think that the maximum bandwidth of mobile internet will be restricted to about 5 mb/s. People will be encouraged instead to get high bandwidth high data relatively low cost cable internet in every building and access it through WiFi. India’s stupid obsession with mobile data speeds and pathetic ignorance of WiFi will be brought to a forced ending. That will be a better distribution of available bandwidth.
Of course, with newer technologies, much better than this may be available.
Don’t ever criticize net neutrality. The internet is mainly a timepass entertainment but the one good thing about it is that no single corporation can control it. Information is freely available. If an internet company gives you free YouTube, it will only be at the cost of censoring YouTube and maybe adding even more layers of ads before watching a clip. And some services like YouTube will enjoy a permanent monopoly over challengers like DailyMotion etc which is not healthy. Your saving a few Mb will come at a high cost to all of us(and if they manage to add extra layers of ads, you may not save that either!)
What’s wrong in a company making their services free of browsing cost? There’s already special data packs even for fb. 8rs for 24hrs free browsing. If you start defining net neutrality like that, nothing can be done. There are Taj hotels with 40000rs per room rent, local lodges 500rs per day, & free shelter homes for poor too. There are pay sites, free sites, likewise there can be browsing charge free sites.
Nothing is free in this world. Why should a handful of social media sites be allowed to use their current dominance to remain forever dominant? I want to live in a world where new challengers have as much of a level playing ground as possible. As it is, the dominance of a single company like Google over Internet search is pretty scary. Why find ways to add to it?
Besides, why should internet companies and the government that provides them spectrum give you free data? They have their own agenda. They want ads by certain companies to become more prominent, some content to be censored. The censorship need not happen in a very open way – simply that a clip criticizing a certain minister may be made less likely to show up on a YouTube recommended list, appear very low in search results even if relevant search terms are entered. This is the kind of thing that is harder to prove or even to notice.
The Internet is not about monopolies but the breaking of monopolies. If you purchase a mobile phone you can buy it from the seller giving the best deal. No one company controls prices, opinions, or anything else. Let us not lose this for the greed of a few Mb
The real problem is India’s foolish obsession with high(but shaky) bandwidth, low data mobile internet. If foreigners observed India’s craze about Airtel 4g even though landline internet gives higher speeds but much higher data plans for the same prices, they will conclude that most Indian mobile phone owners are homeless! That is why no possibility of landline connection accessed through WiFi for them. They will be correct to the point that at least the mentality is that of a homeless person!
The correct solution, as I mentioned in my last post, is to offer low(but rock-steady) bandwidth high(or even unlimited) data connections, with upload speeds equal or a very high fraction of download speeds for mobile internet. My BSNL EVDO connection offers a much smoother browsing experience than Airtel 4g because the bandwidth, though much lower, is a lot more steady. I use it exclusively for social media because of the unlimited data plan(I watch YouTube videos at 480 p, but if I like a video, I can download it at higher resolution from a bunch of sites) I use Airtel 4g chiefly for heavy downloading and uploading. A 2 Mb/s max connection(1.5 Mb/s upload speed) with very steady bandwidth and unlimited data for 1000 rs a month(internet telephony pack 200 rs extra) will be India’s best mobile Internet service. That is what we should get in future. Mobile Internet with higher bandwidth will still be available but at much steeper rates so very few will use them
If you want higher bandwidth, get a landline connection and access through WiFi. Public WiFi should also become more common. Not free WiFi which comes with no accountability, no security, and no bandwidth either, but rather set up a payment service with different bandwidth plans in certain public places. You can download a certain app and on payment(online money transfer) the app will get activated and you will be able to access WiFi near that place by using the app. Even private fast food chains etc can use this to boost customer visits. Then we are using available bandwidth in a much smarter and more convenient way.
Indian Internet usage increased after introducing different offer packs, except for some Ambanis, none are going to use them at standard rates. So not too say ready to pay so much or talk about greed of MBs like that. By the way, When you can access the billions of Web sites at standard data rates or with special data offer packs & companies doesn’t pay to telecom companies to block or throttle speed of opponents & no higher browsing rates than standard rates for some sites, there’s nothing against net neutrality.
Whatsapp service is paid service but they choose to make its service free in India. Similarly they can make it browsing charge free site too. Whatsapp paid service became popular when fb, twitter etc were free. It means even if few sites are made free of browsing charge, billions of sites are not gonna suffer anyway. Whatsapp never failed just because fb, twitter etc were available free. So people will use any sites or services if it has something special, or what they are looking for. Of the billions of sites, some are pay sites some are free sites. Adding another set of browsing charge free sites won’t do any harm.
There are paid games and free game for Android. Any logic in saying not to provide free games as other group wants to sell ? There are iPhones, Galaxies & Chinese Xiaomies etc. Any logic if one say Chinese shouldn’t sell high end hardwares for dirt cheap rates?
reliance jio bought the spectrum to launch 4g not for 2g,3g which others companies providing & these companies are responsible for providing poor service, how jio are responsible for that?
At first say for min 2yrs Rjio will offer 4G for a nominal price to grab customers then they will slowly increase the tariff. Anyway I just hope that Rjio will teach a gud lesson to Avoid Looting group and they will surely succeed if Rjio doesn’t go over greedy likewise FraudTel!
देर ही सही लांच हुवा तो। देर आये दुरुस्त आये। बस अब जल्दी से हम लोगो के लिए भी लांच हो जाये।प्लान भी काफी सस्ते है केवल 99 में 1GB
Hey man jio aur jine 2
They are already running late by 2 years…. And still testing the network.
Good to here this.
It seems first they are testing their network capabilities before actually launching to the general public, which is a very good strategy.(not like Airtel where people faced lot of issues with the call quality itself!!!!)
Completely agree bro.
Dear Sachin, are you still living in era of Mugle Azam?
4G of Jio will bypass every mobile service provider and 2g 3g delay is due to network operators only that does not mean 4g wont be launched its like having mercedes but why own maruti 800 instead.
Thik se padho bhai, then comment. Dont make fun of yourself, he is not talking about speed, he is talking about basic coverage, that is very poor.
Bhai the 4G spectrum is not the same as the 2G and 3G. If 2G and 3G are still not available at some places it does not means you do not proceed with 4G. 2G has good expansion in India. The poor service should put on the shoulders of the carriers.
You are assuming that 4g will be good. Bro, just think, they are unable to give proper coverage even in cities even if they are in the business for so many years, and you think they will give good coverage in their new venture? Funny!!!
Well said….agree with you..
