Micromax A63 review

Performance, Benchmark and Gaming
The MMX A63 houses a 1.3GHz MT6572 chipset (cortex A7) with Mali 400 MP GPU, it’s the same hardware as found on Micromax A74, Xolo A500S. The performance is good. Gaming is not that smooth as seen on A74 and A500S, there is a mild lag – check the video review. Modern combat 4 and Asphalt 7 did not show up on Google Play.

Benchmark scores

  • Quadrant Benchmark : 3273.
  • Antutu Benchmark : 11155.
  • Vellamo Benchmark : HTML5 – 1633, Metal – 471.
  • Nenamark2 : 40.8fps.
  • Multi Touch : 2 point Multi Touch.

Camera and Entertainment
Don’t expect too much from the camera its fixed focus with 2MP resolution and LED flash that hardly works (though it does flash). There is front VGA camera too for video calls. Check the sample images shot using the A63 handset plus the 720p video sample. The still picture quality is okay and video at 720p with 12fps is no good. Full HD video playback is possible using MX player in H/W mode.

Others
No issues with the sound, it loud and clear. This handset supports 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There is no built in GPS receiver, in fact the GPS option is missing in the Notification and quick settings options. You can use Wi-Fi and mobile networks to get the location but it’s not very accurate.

1500 mAh Battery
The 1500 mAh battery gives a talktime of up to 4 hours. I used the handset continuously for 30 minutes (running benchmarks, playing games etc) the battery dropped by 11% and temp rose to 37 degree.

Micromax Canvas Fun A63 verdict
The Micromax A63 competes with Xolo A500s and the Micromax Fun A74. All of these handsets use the same hardware with minor changes like screen size, design and battery. A63 is priced at Rs. 6,399 and does not come with built in GPS. The Xolo A500s is a better option for few hundred Rs. More or spend some extra and get the Micromax A74.
