The Citizen Eco-Drive PHOTON is a special limited-edition watch created to celebrate 50 years of Citizen Eco-Drive technology. It comes in two versions, offers around one year of power reserve and features a unique dial that changes colour depending on how light hits it.
More than 200 years ago, scientist Thomas Young passed light through two narrow slits and discovered something fascinating. The light created a pattern of bright and dark lines, helping prove that light behaves like a wave.
Now Citizen has taken inspiration from that famous experiment and turned it into a watch dial.
Here is a closer look at the Citizen Photon price in India, specifications, Eco-Drive movement and the clever technology used to create its unusual dial.

What Is the Citizen Eco-Drive PHOTON?
The Citizen Eco-Drive PHOTON is a three-hand watch with a modern geometric case and an integrated titanium bracelet.
An integrated bracelet simply means the bracelet connects smoothly with the case instead of using traditional visible lugs. This gives the watch a cleaner and more sculpted appearance.

The name PHOTON comes from the photon, which is a basic particle of light. That name makes perfect sense because the watch itself is powered by light.
You do not need to wind it every morning, and there is no regular battery replacement required.
Citizen has introduced two versions:
- BJ6560-53W
- BJ6569-59X
Both models are limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide.
The caseback also carries the Eco-Drive 50th anniversary logo along with an individual limited-edition number.
Citizen Photon 50th Anniversary: Why 1976 Is Important
Citizen’s light-powered watch story goes back to 1976, when the company launched the world’s first analogue watch powered by light, called the Crystron Solar Cell.
The technology eventually became known as Eco-Drive and is now one of Citizen’s most recognised watch technologies.
Eco-Drive works in a simple way.
A solar cell located underneath the dial collects light from the surroundings. It can use sunlight as well as indoor lighting. This light is converted into electrical energy and stored inside a rechargeable cell.
Once charged, the watch continues running even when there is no light available.
The Citizen Photon 50th anniversary edition is one of the highlight models celebrating this milestone.

A Watch Dial Inspired by the Double-Slit Experiment
Solar watches have an interesting design problem.
Enough light needs to pass through the dial so it can reach the solar cell underneath. At the same time, the dial still needs to look premium.
Citizen normally uses special materials that allow light through, but the PHOTON takes a much more interesting approach.

The dial uses two metal plates with wave-like slits. These plates are placed on top of each other.
Underneath them is a structural colour film, followed by the solar cell.
Light passes through these tiny openings, reaches the film and then travels towards the solar cell underneath.
The result is not just functional. It also creates the watch’s unusual visual effect.
What Is Structural Colour?
Structural colour is created by extremely small surface patterns instead of normal paint or dye.
You can see a similar effect on a peacock feather or the shiny surface of a CD.
Because of this technology, the Citizen Photon dial changes its appearance depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.
The pattern on the dial is inspired by the famous double-slit experiment.
Citizen has added another nice visual trick. The Citizen logo and Eco-Drive text are printed underneath the curved sapphire crystal. This makes the branding appear as though it is floating above the dial.
New Citizen Cal. E036 Eco-Drive Movement
Inside the PHOTON is Citizen’s new Calibre E036 Eco-Drive movement.
The movement is essentially the engine of the watch. It controls the hands and keeps time.
Since Eco-Drive is electronically controlled, some retailers may simply describe the movement as quartz.
| Movement Feature | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Accuracy of ±15 seconds per month | Much more accurate than most mechanical watches |
| Around 1 year power reserve | Can continue running for months without fresh light |
| Power-saving mode | Hands can pause in darkness to save energy |
| Higher torque circuit | Allows the movement to operate larger hands efficiently |
The new circuit is particularly interesting.
Citizen says it is thinner than previous Eco-Drive designs while also producing more torque.
That extra turning force allows the PHOTON to use larger and easier-to-read hands without requiring a bulky movement.
Citizen Eco-Drive Titanium Case
The case and bracelet are made using Citizen Super Titanium.
Citizen combines titanium with its Duratect surface-hardening technology.
Titanium is already popular because it is much lighter than stainless steel. However, untreated titanium can pick up scratches quite easily.
Duratect creates a harder outer surface that improves scratch resistance.
The complete watch weighs only around 82 grams, including the bracelet.
Its dimensions are also quite wearable:
- Case diameter: 39.6 mm
- Thickness: 9.9 mm
- Weight: Around 82 grams
This size should work well for many wrist sizes without making the watch feel oversized.

The integrated bracelet uses a three-fold clasp with push buttons and supports wrist sizes of roughly 132 mm to 200 mm.
Citizen has also used a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating to protect the dial and reduce reflections.
Water resistance is rated at 5 bar, or approximately 50 metres.
That is suitable for normal daily exposure such as rain, hand washing and occasional splashes. This is not a watch designed specifically for serious diving.
The hands and hour markers also include luminous material for better visibility in low light.

Citizen Photon Price in India and Release Date
The Citizen Photon BJ6569-59X price in India is Rs 1,29,900, including taxes.
This is the black and gold version of the watch.
It has been listed by Just In Time, an authorised multi-brand watch retailer in India, with free delivery available.
International pricing gives some idea of how the two models are positioned.
| Market | BJ6560-53W Silver | BJ6569-59X Black and Gold |
|---|---|---|
| India | To be confirmed | Rs 1,29,900 |
| United States | $995 | $1,195 |
| United Kingdom | £749 | £895 |
The India price of the silver BJ6560-53W has not yet been confirmed.
Considering its lower international price, it should be cheaper than the black BJ6569-59X if and when it officially becomes available in India.
The Citizen PHOTON watches were announced in March 2026.
Sales started through Citizen’s US and UK online stores in August 2026, while Japan received both models on 1 October 2026.
You can check the latest Citizen Eco-Drive Photon availability.
Since production is limited to only 5,000 pieces of each model, availability could become tighter once watch collectors start picking them up.
Two Citizen Photon Limited Editions With Different Styles
Although both models use the same basic design and movement, they look quite different.
Citizen BJ6560-53W
The silver BJ6560-53W has the more versatile design.
Its bright titanium finish works nicely with the unusual dial, while the yellow seconds hand adds a small splash of colour.
It should also be easier to pair with both formal and casual clothing.
Citizen BJ6569-59X
The black BJ6569-59X looks much more dramatic.
It combines a dark DLC-coated case with amber gold accents and a purple seconds hand.
The darker dial can suddenly reveal different colours when light hits the layered slit pattern.
This is definitely the more attention-grabbing option of the two.
Limited-edition watches are also becoming increasingly interesting for Indian buyers.

Citizen Photon FAQs
Does the Citizen Eco-Drive PHOTON need a battery change?
No. The watch collects energy from light and stores it inside a rechargeable cell. Regular battery replacement is therefore not required.
How long can the Citizen Photon run without light?
It can run for around one year on a full charge when the power-saving function is being used.
Is the Citizen Photon a solar watch?
Yes. Eco-Drive is Citizen’s light-powered watch technology. It can collect energy from both sunlight and indoor lighting.
How many Citizen Photon watches are being made?
Citizen is producing 5,000 units of each version.
That means a total of 10,000 Citizen PHOTON watches worldwide across the two references.
Can you swim with the Citizen Photon?
The watch has 5 bar water resistance, which is suitable for rain, splashes and normal everyday use.
For regular swimming, water sports or diving, a higher-rated Citizen Promaster model would be a better choice.
Is the Citizen Eco-Drive PHOTON Worth Looking At?
Citizen introduced its first light-powered analogue watch 50 years ago. At the time, the concept itself was unusual.
The Citizen Eco-Drive PHOTON shows how much that technology has evolved.
You get a lightweight Super Titanium case, sapphire crystal, around one year of power reserve and a completely new Eco-Drive movement inside a watch measuring just 9.9 mm thick.
But the most interesting feature is clearly the dial.
Instead of hiding the solar technology, Citizen has made light part of the design itself. The layered metal plates, structural colour film and shifting colours make the dial look different every time the viewing angle changes.
At Rs 1,29,900 for the BJ6569-59X, this is definitely aimed more at watch collectors than buyers simply looking for an everyday Eco-Drive.
Still, the PHOTON does something unusual. The same light that powers the watch also creates the visual effect that makes the watch special.
