Smart locks in India have mostly been the kind that either need a professional to fit them or cost north of Rs 15,000 before you even think about installation charges. Xiaomi wants to change that conversation with the Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock, a retrofit smart lock that sits over your existing door mechanism, needs zero drilling, and speaks Matter natively.
It’s currently available in select global markets and worth knowing about if you’re planning a smart home setup.

What Makes This Lock Different
Most smart locks on the Indian market replace your existing mechanism entirely. That means drilling, alignment work, and often a technician visit that costs as much as the lock itself. The Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock takes a completely different route.
It clips over your current lock cylinder or door knob using the existing keyhole or knob shaft as the drive point. No holes in the door. No structural changes. If you’re renting, or if you simply don’t want to commit to permanent modifications, this is a meaningful distinction.
The lock body sits on the inside of your door. The keypad attaches on the outside, using either screws or double-sided adhesive. The two talk to each other, and the whole thing connects to your home network over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth simultaneously.
Unlocking Methods
The Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock supports seven ways to get through your door:

The fingerprint sensor is worth pausing on. Xiaomi tested it at 99.3% across 20,000 match attempts using a database of 1,000 fingerprints. The rejection rate sits at 0.7%, which is competitive for a retrofit device at this price tier. One note from Xiaomi’s fine print: fingerprint recognition is designed for users aged 7 to 70, and elderly users or very young children may see lower success rates due to underdeveloped or worn fingerprints.
The virtual password feature deserves a mention too. You can enter random digits before or after your actual PIN, so anyone watching can’t isolate your real code from the key presses.
Security Features
Full-stack protection is the phrase Xiaomi uses, and it’s not entirely marketing fluff here. The lock runs on the MJA1 chipset and carries European Cybersecurity Standard EN18031 certification, which covers end-to-end software and hardware protections.
On the physical side:
- The keypad has a hidden anti-tamper switch. If someone tries to pry it off, the app sends an immediate alert and the keypad sounds an alarm.
- The lock has cleared 100,000 open-and-close cycle tests, conducted mechanically at Lingdu Laboratory.
- Duress unlock alerts: if someone forces you to open the door using a registered duress fingerprint, the app flags it as abnormal immediately.
- Failed attempt limits are configurable in Xiaomi Home. Default is 10 attempts, after which the keypad locks for 90 seconds.
- The keypad carries an IP65 rating, so rain, dust, and the humidity levels typical across Indian cities are not a concern.
Auto-lock works two ways. With a door sensor installed, the lock detects when the door physically closes and engages after a preset delay. Without the sensor, it works on a scheduled timer. Auto-lock is disabled by default and needs to be turned on manually in the app.
Matter and Smart Home Integration
This is where the Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock stands apart from most smart locks currently sold in India. Matter support means it connects natively to:
- Apple HomeKit and Siri
- Google Home and Google Assistant
- Amazon Alexa
- Xiaomi Home
You do not need a separate hub for any of these. The lock uses Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and Thread (IEEE 802.15.4), giving it three wireless radios to work with depending on which ecosystem you’re running.
Voice unlock works through compatible smart speakers, though Alexa and Google Assistant require a user-set PIN for the actual unlock command. Apple Siri unlocking requires the phone to be unlocked first and successful voice recognition.
For remote access, the lock connects to Xiaomi Home over Wi-Fi. Features available remotely include lock status checks, access logs, family arrival notifications, low battery reminders, and abnormal access alerts.
Battery Life
The lock body runs on a built-in 2450mAh lithium battery. Xiaomi rates it at six months of use based on 10 lock/unlock cycles per day at 25°C. The keypad uses two AA alkaline batteries. Once the keypad batteries drain, they need to be replaced with alkaline cells specifically; other battery types can be a safety risk. Xiaomi strongly recommends keeping a mechanical key in a secure outdoor location as backup in case the batteries run low unexpectedly.
Lock Cylinder Compatibility
Before you buy this, check your door. The lock works with several cylinder types:

Key installation requirements: key thickness must be 5mm or under, the remaining blade length after insertion must be 37mm or less, and the cylinder must have an emergency function allowing outside access even with a key inserted inside. For inward-opening doors, the lock cylinder projection height must be at least 35mm. For outward-opening doors, at least 50mm.
If your cylinder doesn’t fit any of these profiles or doesn’t meet the projection requirements, a cylinder replacement is needed before installation.

India Availability and Price
The Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock has launched in Japan (approximately Rs 7,100) and UAE (approximately Rs 8,000 equivalent at AED 359). An India launch has not been confirmed yet.
