The Nothing Phone (3a) Community Edition represents a groundbreaking moment in consumer tech a limited-run smartphone built not behind closed doors, but through a global creative collaboration. Over nine months, the initiative drew more than 700 submissions from designers, developers, storytellers, and creators across the world.

The result is a device that embodies a new philosophy: technology shaped with the community, not merely engineered for them.

Nothing’s Community Edition Project has evolved into one of the industry’s most compelling co-creation efforts. By integrating community-driven ideas into hardware, software, accessories, and even campaign design, the 2025 edition establishes a blueprint for future participatory product development.

A New Era of Co-Creation in Consumer Tech

Nothing has repeatedly challenged conventional norms in design and user engagement, and the Nothing Phone (3a) Community Edition is its most vivid example yet. Instead of restricting community involvement to feedback or beta testing, Nothing elevates fans into co-authors of the final product.

This year’s edition expanded the scope significantly, spanning:

  • Hardware and packaging design
  • Software elements including clock faces and wallpapers
  • Accessory development, a new category for 2025
  • Brand communications and marketing strategy

The previous Community Edition won an iF Design Gold Award, and the 2025 version pushes the concept even further by giving creators extended development time, direct mentorship from Nothing’s London teams, and a £1,000 prize per category. The huge response 700+ entries signals a global appetite for deeper collaboration between brands and creative communities.

The Four Winning Creators Behind the Nothing Phone (3a) Community Edition

After a rigorous evaluation and months of joint development, four creators emerged as the winners of this year’s program, each redefining a different aspect of the Nothing Phone (3a) Community Edition.

Hardware & Packaging Design – Emre Kayganacl

Emre’s winning hardware design draws inspiration from late-1990s and early-2000s technology, an era defined by colourful, transparent gadgets and experimental forms. His reimagined aesthetic combines retro gaming nostalgia with Nothing’s crisp futuristic DNA.

The result is a distinctive colour and structural language that stands apart from mainstream smartphones while staying faithful to the transparent, precision-built philosophy that defines the Nothing brand.

Accessory Design – Ambrogio Tacconi & Louis Aymonod

Introduced for the first time in 2025, the accessory category delivered a standout concept: The Dice.

Used across civilizations for thousands of years, dice symbolize play, choice, and strategy. The creators blended this universal symbolism with Nothing’s identity by incorporating the Ndot 55 font into each face of the dice merging classic dotted patterns with modern digital typography.

The accessory serves not just as a collectible, but as a playful extension of the Nothing ecosystem.

Lock Screen Clock & Wallpaper Design – Jad Zock

Jad’s software contribution introduces a clock face built from multiple font weights to enhance clarity and reduce visual noise. This design improves legibility intuitively an extension of Nothing’s ethos of purposeful minimalism.

He also created a set of four exclusive wallpapers two blue, two purple designed as visual bridges between the rear hardware texture and the phone’s front interface. Each wallpaper contains subtle easter eggs that reward keen observers.

Marketing Campaign – Sushruta Sarkar

The marketing concept, titled “Made Together”, captures the core spirit of the Community Edition. Instead of celebrating a final design, the campaign showcases the collaborative journey highlighting the creative synergy that fueled the entire project.

Working with Nothing’s in-house marketing team, Sushruta crafted a direction that amplifies Nothing’s long-standing belief that tech should be fun and inspire creativity.

An Inside Look at Nothing’s Collaborative Development Model

Throughout the program, winners collaborated closely with Nothing’s teams across design, engineering, software, and marketing in London. This mentorship-heavy approach reinforced the company’s commitment to transparency and co-creation.

The initiative aligns with Nothing’s broader movement toward community-driven growth, which also includes:

  • A Community Board Observer who sits in on board meetings
  • A newly launched $5 million community investment round at Nothing’s $1.3B valuation
  • A belief that future personal technology should be shaped by the people who use it, not just by corporate roadmaps

Early access for investment opens 10 December via Wefunder (US) and Crowdcube, with general access beginning 11 December.
