Somewhere in India right now, a person is staring at a ₹2,99,900 price tag and doing the kind of maths that ends with “maybe I can sell the scooter.” The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, went on sale on October 23, and yes, it looks gorgeous.

It is also eye-wateringly expensive to buy, scary expensive to repair, and very clearly a first attempt. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 has been on shelves since August at a starting price of ₹1,79,999, and it comes from a company that has been folding phones since 2019.

This piece breaks down the iPhone Duo vs Samsung Fold 8 fight on price, repair cost, AppleCare+, performance and plain common sense. Spoiler: your wallet already has an opinion.

iPhone Duo Price in India: Just ₹100 Short of Three Lakh

Apple priced the base model at ₹2,99,900. That ₹100 gap below ₹3 lakh feels less like a discount and more like Apple politely holding the door before taking your money. Full launch details are in our iPhone Duo price in India and full specifications coverage.

The same base phone costs $1,999 in the US, roughly ₹1.9 lakh. So Indian buyers pay over a lakh extra for the privilege of buying it at home.

Fun fact from Google’s search suggestions: people in India are actually typing “iPhone Duo vs Tata Tiago” and “iPhone Duo vs car.” When your phone gets compared with a hatchback, the pricing has clearly left the smartphone category.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Price in India

Now for the phone that does not require a family meeting before purchase. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is Samsung’s new wide-format foldable, and it costs about ₹1.2 lakh less than the iPhone Duo at the entry level.

Read that last row again. The top 1TB Fold 8 is still about ₹60,000 cheaper than the base 256GB iPhone Duo. Deals have also pushed the Fold 8 closer to ₹1.7 lakh at times.

If you want the bigger, heavier sibling with a 200MP camera, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at ₹1,99,999. We also compared the Fold 8 against China’s newest rival in our Xiaomi 18 Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 breakdown.

iPhone Duo vs Samsung Fold 8: Specs Side by Side

A quick glossary first. The cover display is the outer screen you use when the phone is closed. The crease is the faint line in the middle of a folding screen. eSIM is a digital SIM with no physical card at all.

The iPhone Duo is 53 grams heavier. That is like carrying an extra chocolate bar in your pocket all day, except you cannot eat it and it cost you a lakh.

iPhone Duo Repair Cost in India: The Part That Truly Hurts

Buying the iPhone Duo is the first shock. The iPhone Duo repair cost is the sequel nobody wanted. Apple has listed its estimated service prices in India, and the inner folding screen alone costs ₹1,49,900 to replace without AppleCare+.

That is roughly half the price of the phone. Drop it once at the wrong angle and you are suddenly paying iPhone 18 Pro money for a screen.

Samsung also lists a smaller main screen component repair at ₹35,490 for the Fold 8. Either way, Samsung’s worst screen bill is about a third of Apple’s.

Then there is the mysterious “other damage” line at ₹2,24,900. Apple does not explain exactly what falls under it, but at that price it might as well read “please just buy a new phone.”

Want to stay out of the service centre altogether? A good Galaxy Z Fold 8 case and a Fold 8 screen protector cost a tiny fraction of any repair.

Does AppleCare+ Fix the iPhone Duo Problem?

AppleCare+ is Apple’s extended protection plan. You pay upfront or monthly, and in return, accidental damage repairs drop to a fixed service fee. For the Duo, it brings an inner screen repair down from ₹1,49,900 to ₹8,900.

Sounds like a rescue, right? Not so fast. AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo is reported to cost ₹51,900 upfront or ₹4,709 per month in India. And even with the plan, every accident still costs ₹8,900.

So even if you buy a Fold 8 with no protection plan at all and then break its inner screen, you still spend over ₹1.2 lakh less than a careful AppleCare+ iPhone Duo owner who had one bad day.

The monthly option is not much kinder. ₹4,709 a month is more than many people’s mobile EMI, and here it is just the insurance for the mobile.

Why the First iPhone Duo Is a Risky Bet

Apple products usually get dramatically better in their second year. The first Apple Watch was slow and the second fixed most of that. The first iPad was heavier than the one that followed. First generations are where companies learn in public.

Early iPhone Duo reviews say much the same. Several reviewers pointed to first-generation bugs and apps that are not yet optimised for the big screen.

There are more quirks to know about:

  • Weight: almost every review calls it hefty, and it feels it at 254g.
  • Crease: Apple reduced it with a nano-texture finish, but it is still there.
  • No Face ID: you unlock with Touch ID on the side button instead.
  • eSIM only: no physical SIM tray anywhere in the world.
  • Battery: Apple’s own figures show shorter battery life than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
  • Buttons: some reviewers noticed a right-handed bias in the button layout.

None of this makes the Duo a bad phone. It makes it a first draft, and first drafts should not cost ₹3 lakh.

Galaxy Z Fold 8: Eight Generations of Fixing Mistakes

Samsung’s very first Galaxy Fold in 2019 famously had review units with broken screens and a delayed launch. That painful lesson is exactly why the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feels so polished today. Samsung has had seven years to sand off the rough edges.

The new wide Fold 8 is Samsung’s lightest Fold yet at 201g. It has a wider 10:16 cover screen, so typing feels like a regular phone instead of a TV remote. It also packs a 4,800mAh battery with 45W wired charging and IP48 dust and water protection.

IP48 means the phone handles water immersion and resists larger dust particles, though fine sand is still not its friend. In durability testing by JerryRigEverything, the standard Fold 8 survived a backward bend while the pricier Fold 8 Ultra did not.

Samsung also promises up to seven major Android upgrades, so the phone you buy today should stay current for years.

Performance: Raw Power vs Real-World Polish

Credit where due: Apple’s A20 Pro is a very fast chip, the same one inside the iPhone 18 Pro. But speed on paper is only half of the performance story on a foldable.

The Fold 8 runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and pairs it with One UI, which has had years of foldable multitasking work. Split screens, floating windows and app continuity feel natural because Samsung has been refining them since the first Fold.

On the Duo, Apple is still labelling which apps are “Made for iPhone Duo,” and plenty of popular apps are not there yet. Some early analysis also suggests the thinner foldable body may throttle sooner under long gaming sessions than a regular Pro iPhone.

Put simply, the iPhone Duo has a powerful engine sitting in a car that is still getting its road test. The Fold 8 is the car that has done the Mumbai to Pune run a hundred times.

Apple Fans: Why Waiting for iPhone Duo 2 Makes Sense

If you love iOS and a foldable is the dream, the smartest move right now might be patience. The second iPhone Duo will almost certainly be lighter, better optimised and backed by a much bigger app ecosystem.

Will it be cheap? Absolutely not. Apple will still charge a premium, and Gen 2 will likely be costly too. But you will be paying for a refined product instead of funding Apple’s learning curve.

In the meantime, the iPhone 18 Pro at ₹1,64,900 runs the very same A20 Pro chip. Browse current iPhone options in our iPhone shopping collection while the Duo grows up.

The scoreboard is pretty one-sided. The iPhone Duo wins on chip bragging rights and Apple loyalty. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 wins on almost everything you will feel in daily life, including the part where you open your bank app.

If you still want to see the Duo justify its price, our earlier take on who will buy the iPhone Duo at ₹2,99,900 explores that question with a straight face. Mostly.

The Final Fold

For anyone who wants a foldable today, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the easy pick. It is cheaper, lighter, more refined and far less terrifying to repair, and it comes from a brand on its eighth attempt instead of its first.

For Apple users, the iPhone Duo is a beautiful promise of what is coming. Let the early adopters find the bugs, let Apple fix them, and come back for Duo number two with a slightly calmer heart rate.
