Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus were recently launched in China. These handsets come with 18:9 aspect ratio screen and priced under Rs. 13,000. Here is the Redmi 5 Plus review that will give you a better idea about the product, performance, camera and battery life.

This is the first handset from Xiaomi with a 18:9 aspect screen ratio with a budget price tag. Once you use any 18:9 screen smartphone, you are not going to like the other normal screen smartphones. The Redmi 5 Plus gives an extended viewing experience.

Snapdragon 625 does a pretty good job, even when it comes to gaming. Hardware does not heat up much and the battery life is pretty awesome, almost the same you get on the Redmi Note 4. Camera quality is above average.

Verdict

The Redmi 5 Plus is as good as the Redmi Note 4 but with 18:9 screen and that gives a whole new experience to this handset. Indeed a very good buy. However this handset has not yet been launched in India, not sure if the company will launch same thing / name it something else  or launch a different variant / model in India, most likely Redmi Note 5.

You can wait and see what the company will launch, should happen in a month or two, or you can buy this handset from China – make sure to watch the unboxing video as well as the full review video.

Rating : 4.1  out of 5

You can buy the Redmi 5 / Redmi 5 Plus from China or wait for the official launch in India.

You can buy this from GearBest, do note you will need to pay custom duty anywhere from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 6000.

Redmi 5 price in China is $185 (approx Rs. 11,700).
Redmi 5 Plus price in China is $199 (approx Rs. 12,600).

  1. This will be a total flop if the 64GB variant is not priced below 12k. Honor 7x is superior to this, better front camera, Huawei/Honor is a global brand with stores all over the world – India,China, East Asia, Middle East, Africa, European countries, UK , USA, even Latin America. Xiaomi is a brand which have huge sales in India & China but not very well known in rest of the world. Honor 7x camera is not great, but still it is better than Redmi 5 Plus camera. Huawei/Honor’s EMUI is still better than Xiaomi’s MIUI. Xiaomi & LG has the most cartoonish/childish UI at this point of time. People will only buy Redmi 5 Plus with single camera (Oreo still not announced) over Honor 7x if Xiaomi sells that 4GB RAM/64GB storage at Rs 12k. Xiaomi is also too late to release a mid-range 18:9 small bezel phone, Honor, LG, even Oppo, Vivo & MMX has launched 18:9 small bezel phone. Just like LG was late was to launch V30+ in India & other Asian countries, Xiaomi is also late to launch Redmi 5 Plus. Honor has already sold 3 millions (30 lacs) 7x in India online. Honor always have open sale most of the time, unlike Xiaomi. Redmi 5 Plus is doomed to fail unless they launch the 4GB RAM/64GB storage at Rs 12k.

  3. At 13k, i don’t see this smartphone as worthy competitor of honor 7x… Probably this is true competitor of lg Q6 and vovo’s and oppo’s, even gionee now…. I wonder if xiaomi can releases MI A1 plus… Woaah…. It would be killer man.. 18:9 + dual camera and stock Android (some like, some don’t), it would be budget 5T.. With same kinda oneplus design… And maybe we can see rise of HDR i guess, some tech guys said that with HDR plus or some improved HDR it can stop the dual camera trend.. And MI A1+ with on screen fingerprint too ?

    1. What is so special in 7x??? In fact, it has worst dualncam setup, and performance in gaming is mediocre. I dont know which 7x you are talking about, but all the reviews I have seen said there is nothing special in 7x except screen.

      1. Man then you know nothing… I’ve been using it from half month, performance is amazing, smooth in one word if i say, ram management and battery management is good, screen impressive, camera amazing too idk what reviews you saw but they are really good… Comparable to mi A1 and upcoming software update will make them better, also the dual camera in 7x works fine (fine for me), portraits clicked by portrait mode in outdoors are amazing and even in night it can click good portraits and the wide aperture too… Aslo for your knowledge 7x camera captures more details than MI A1 also front camera is better, and design, duh do i have to tell about design? The phone has nothing to complain about… The only thing is performance glitches(too minor) and after switching off animation, they are gone… For me 7x is better than my friend’s mi a1… And even one of my friend too bought 7x. so…. Boy honestly 7x is above your imagination, you will be convinced when you will hold it in your hands… And yeah for your knowledge, in future updates honor will enable gyroscope (the update is in rolling out process)

        1. loll gyroscop is hardware component not software component ,it will not be included in software updates

      2. Amole & Milan, Face unlock functionality along with Android Oreo coming to Honor 7x in February. You have understand 7x is a good looking 18:9 phone with small bezels. Gone are days of 16:9 display phone. Honor 7x (78% screen ratio) looks quite similar to 5T(80% screen ratio) at just 13k. One of my best friend uses 5T’s wallpaper in his 7x. One day I thought that he was in fact bought 5T. Which other company has a FullHD+ 18:9 phone with small bezels at 13k. 18:9 phones can be used with one hand, 16:9 phones requires both hand. All people in this world or in India are not blessed with big hands. People with small hands can easily manage 6 inch 18:9 display phones with one hand, but they cannot manage a 6 inch 16:9 phone with one hand. Q6 is inferior to 7x because it does not have fingerprint, and search google Face Unlock coming to Honor 7x soon

  4. U give 4.1 rating for this phone , and 4.5 for Mi A1 , so in short Mi A1 is much much better, am I right Mr Gogi ?

    1. I have shown the Antutu score in my video, the one I got, watch carefully you will get the answer.

  5. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s the thing that Xiaomi has done with Redmi 5 plus.

  6. 75k Antutu Surprising since redmi note 4 has 63k.
    Waiting For Indian Launch ,
Indian price should be between 10-12k for 3GB variant.
Must Upgrade for Redmi note 3 users .
    And

  8. Gogi ji, which camera is better – Infinix note 4 or redmi 5 plus ( if camera is the main priority)

    1. Not much difference same. This camera on 5 Plus is slightly better, but better wait for official launch in India, lets see what the company gets into India.

  9. Its not a good idea to buy it from China due to high custom duty and secondly we will get much better Redmi note 5 for same price when it gets launched here. all you need is a good luck in flash sale.
