Samsung Gear Fit review – wearable personalized fitness manager

Samsung launched the Gear Fit along with the Gear 2 Smartwatch. The Gear Fit is another wearable device designed for style, comfort and can keep a log of your fitness activities. Gear Fit – as the name suggest is for fitness conscious users.

Box pack
The Gear Fit comes packed inside a small box. The other contents are charging dock (with micro USB port) , travel charger with micro USB pin, warranty card and quick start guide.

Design
The Gear Fit sports a 1.84 inch curved screen (Super AMOLED display). There is a single power button on the right side. On the rear side there is the charging port and heart rate sensor. The device is light weight at just 26 grams.

This futuristic looking device looks more like a band. The strap is made of good quality rubber and there are two metal studs to secure the strap as per your wrist size. The strap can be changed if need (available in different colors). There are accelerometer, heart rate and gyro sensors.

The Samsung Gear Fit is IP67 certified which means it is totally protected against dust and can survive being submerged underwater – not more than 1 meter for 30 minutes. The Fit makes use of Bluetooth 4.0 technology for communicating with the Samsung devices.

Operating System
The device runs on customized OS called Tizen. The firmware update (when available) gets updated automatically when connected with the smartphone. You will need to pair the Fit with the Samsung Smartphone. The processes is simple, you just need to follow the instructions. The Fit device will work with many Samsung smartphones it worked with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note II.

Fit Usage
The display quality is very good and easily visible under direct sunlight, even the viewing angles are great. The orientation can be changed to horizontal or vertical. This is basically a fitness centric device – there is pedometer to record steps and calories burned, the exercise mode (running, cycling, walking and hiking + exercise history) and heart rate.

When using the fitness mode the heart rate is constantly checked. The heart rate sensor will emit the green light when active.

Apart from the exercise mode the Fit can also be used as a watch (looks great). You can read notifications (SMS’s) and even reply back using predefined text. You can also control the media on your smartphone using the media controller via the Gear Fit device. Other features are timer, stop watch and sleep (monitor your sleep pattern).

You can select the clock style, the wallpaper and even assign a feature to work directly when double tapped – for example double tap to start the pedometer. In display settings you can set the brightness, rotate screen (vertical / horizontal), set font size, home icon size and set the wake up gesture.

You can receive incoming call notification but you will need the smartphone or a Bluetooth headset to answer the call, however you can cancel the call from the Gear Fit device and also send a pre-defined message if needed.

Built in speaker and microphone are missing and all notifications are via vibration alerts. The performance is very smooth and the built in battery of 210 mAh gives usage time of around 3 to 4 days.

Verdict
The Gear Fit is your personalized fitness manger with heart rate sensor that provides real time info. It is a light weight wearable device with a futuristic look and with good battery backup. The Gear 2 Smartwatch also includes all of these features, compared with the Gear 2 the Fit is cheaper, however the Gear 2 Neo and the Fit price is the same, which makes the Gear 2 Neo a better option.

The Samsung Gear Fit is available for Rs. 15,450.
