XOLO Era 2x review – 3GB RAM, VoLTE support

XOLO launched the Era 2x handset in India. This is a quad core powered handset with finger print sensor, running Marshmallow and packed with 2500 mAh battery. XOLO Era 2x supports 4G with VoLTE.

Unboxing : Inside the box – handset, user manual warranty card, data cable, standard quality earphone and travel charger 5V/1A.

Design, Display and OS

The XOLO Era 2x handset looks premium, body is made of plastic, sides are grayish silver colored with metallic finishing and back panel is black color with a matte finish. Overall build and finishing is very good, handset is comfortable to hold and use.

This is a dual SIM handset, there are 2x micro SIM slots and a separate micro SD card slot. There is no LED notification and there are just 3 sensors – accelerometer, proximity and light.

XOLO Era 2x sports a 5 inch screen (fully laminated) supporting 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. Screen quality, viewing angles, touch are good.

2x is running Marshmallow (Android 6) out of the box.

Memory and Storage

There is 16GB ROM and 3GB RAM. On the first boot you will get around 11GB free internal storage space and about 1.2GB free RAM. OTG is not supported I was not able to connect external pen drive.

Performance

XOLO Era 2x is using MediaTek MT6737 quad core SOC clocked at 1.2GHz – this is 64 bit packed with Mali T720 GPU. Except for gaming the handset performance was good enough. Heat-up is under control maximum battery temperature I encountered was 40 degrees.

Benchmark

Quadrant : 12922
AnTuTu : 29843 / 2376 – 2nd time 30099 / 2419
Nenamark 2 : 51.8fps
Disk Speed : 62 MB/s read / 75 MB/s write
Multi Touch : 5 point

Gaming

This hardware is not the best for gaming though you can play games by setting the quality to low. I could play Asphalt 8 in low visual quality mode with ease.

Camera

The primary camera on the back can shoot in 8MP resolution and front camera in 5MP resolution. Camera quality is average. XOLO Era 2x can shoot 720p videos – video quality is good.

Others

Era 2x comes with a finger print sensor on the back. Finger print detection and accuracy is pretty fast. To unlock phone when finger print unlock is enabled, all you need to do is tap the finger print sensor.

Sound is loud and clear no issues, in-call sound also great. Reliance Jio SIM worked and I did not find any issues with networks. WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth also worked fine.

Battery

There is a 2500 mAh battery that can be removed if needed. Battery life is okay. You can expect 3 to 5 hours of non-stop moderate to heavy usage on a single charge. With mixed moderate usage you can expect just about 24 hours of battery life.

XOLO Era 2x Battery Performance (time / battery % drop / estimated battery temperature)

  • Running Benchmark app – 10 minutes / 3% / 34 degrees
  • Asphalt 8 play – 16 minutes / 8% / 40 degrees
  • FHD video playback with full brightness (WiFi /4G on) – 37 minutes / 12% / 37 degrees.

It took me 2 hours 26 minutes to charge the handset from 10% to 100% using wall charger. Approx charging time from 0% to 100% will be under 3 hours.

Verdict

The performance, camera and battery life is okay but when it comes to the price tag it is on the higher side. The XOLO Era 2x with 2GB RAM is priced at Rs. 6,666 and the 2x with 3GB RAM is priced at Rs. 7,499. Spending this much for a quad core makes no sense.

Rating 3.5 out of 5

XOLO Era 2x will go on sale on Flipkart this January 9th 2017.
