Xolo A800 review – Dual core with 4.5 inch qHD IPS display

The Xolo A800 from Lava comes with dual core processor clocked at 1GHz (MTK6577) with PowerVR SGX 531 GPU. The handset sports a 4.5 inch qHD display with 16M colours. The A800 is priced at Rs. 11,999.

Box Pack
The box pack contains handset, earphone, charger, USB to micro USB cable, warranty booklet and user manual. On the box pack its mentioned 12GB Memory which in fact is combination of 4GB internal storage plus 8GB micro SD card that you get free (you will find it in the box or it will already be placed in the micro SD card slot).

Inside the hood
The Lava Xolo A800 comes with 512MB RAM with dual core processor running on the Android 4.0.4 OS. The screen of 4.5 inches supports 960×540 pixels resolution. The handset is 10.5mm thick and supports dual SIM with dual standby mode.

The camera of 8MP resolution is placed on the rear side with LED flash and a VGA camera is present on the front side. Other features are 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, 3.5 mm jack and micro USB port.

There are light, proximity and G-sensors. A 1600 mAh Li-ion battery give a talktime of about 5 hours on 2G and 2 hours on 3G network.

Performance
The MTK6577 and 531 PowerVR SGX GPU powers this handset, same as we have seen on Micromax A110, Lava Iris 501, iBall Andi 4.5h and some more handsets. We already know how the hardware performance.

The internal space for apps is 503MB and internal storage is around 2GB – same as the MMX A110 (with V1 ROM).

Benchmark scores

  • Quadrant Benchmark : 2630.
  • Antutu Benchmark : 6508.
  • Nenamark2: 23.5 fps.
  • Linpack : Single – 37, Multi – 55.
  • Multi Touch : 5 point.

The touch is smooth, sensitive and responsive. Resolution is really great, viewing angles are good, fonts clear and sharp. There are no performance lags.  In call sound during phone calls is loud and clear.

Gaming
The hardware is the same as on A110 and the internal storage allocation is also similar. Which means you can install games of max 1.8GB size on this handset. Modern Combat 3 as seen on the A110 will also play (I have not tested though) on this handset with ease, – enough space and a capable hardware.

Camera
The Xolo A800 also has the same 8MP camera with LED flash and front 0.3MP camera for video calls. You can record videos in 720p resolution.

You can check the sample video shot at the end of the article.

The still photo quality is same as seen on other MTK 6577 handsets. Outdoor it’s excellent and indoors not that great.

Entertainment
The handset can play 720p videos but you cannot play 1080p videos. MP3 and many other auto and video formats are supported.

Battery
A 1600 mAh battery should be sufficient to get it going for a full 24 hours and more.

Xolo A800 review
In simple terms it’s the same hardware as on the A110, but with a 4.5 inch screen and a higher resolution. There are light sensors which are missing on A110. Cost wise its approx 2K more, but still with 512MB RAM. The built quality is better than A110, it’s smaller and has got a premium look. But for Rs. 11,999 it seems a bit over priced especially when for Rs. 12,500 you can get the iBall 4.5h with 1GB RAM.
