What Is the Sudo Music Player?
The Sudo SP-01 is designed mainly for listening to music.
There are no social media apps, chats or games fighting for your attention. You get your music library, playlists and headphones, which is pretty much the whole idea behind this device.
Its design clearly takes inspiration from older iPods. There is a square display at the top and a circular tactile wheel below it.
Sudo is not an Apple product, and New Matter has designed its own wheel rather than copying Apple’s original click wheel.
What exactly is a tactile wheel?
It is a physical round controller that you can feel with your thumb. Instead of tapping everything on a glass screen, you can use the wheel for actions such as play, pause and skipping tracks. Most menu navigation is handled through the touchscreen.

Some of these features are especially useful on a dedicated music player.
Offline playback means music can be stored directly on the device. You can continue listening while travelling on a flight, sitting inside a metro tunnel or anywhere else where mobile connectivity is poor.
The microSD card slot supports cards up to 1TB, giving you plenty of room for a large offline music collection. A 1TB card can store well over one lakh songs when using typical MP3 files. This makes Sudo useful for anyone looking for a music player device with SD card support.
There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can connect normal wired earphones without using an adapter.
Prefer wireless earbuds? Bluetooth is available as well, making Sudo a proper music player device with Bluetooth.
The device runs Sudo OS, New Matter’s own software. Screenshots shared by the company show simple sections such as Albums, Artists, Playlists and Now Playing. The interface keeps things focused mainly on music.
Sudo Music Player Price and Launch Date
The expected Sudo music player price is $249, excluding taxes and shipping.
That converts to a little over ₹20,000 before considering shipping charges, customs duty or other import costs.
New Matter is allowing interested buyers to reserve a unit from the first production batch, called Batch #1, by paying a $50 deposit.
The reservation amount is refundable until the final purchase is completed. It will also be adjusted against the final price if you decide to buy the player.
| Detail | What we know so far |
|---|---|
| Expected price | $249 plus taxes and shipping |
| Reservation deposit | $50, refundable until purchase |
| Expected shipping | Beginning of Q4 2027 |
| Reservation countries | US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand |
| India | Waitlist only for now |
| Colour change | Allowed before your order enters production |
New Matter says the final price will be confirmed before reservation holders are asked to make the remaining payment.
So while $249 is the expected price right now, it could still change before the product starts shipping.
Is the Sudo Music Player Available in India?
Not currently.
Reservations are open in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand. India is not included in the first reservation list.
People interested in buying Sudo in India can join the company’s waitlist to receive future updates.
There is no official India price either.
If the device eventually reaches Indian buyers through international shipping or imports, customs duty, taxes and shipping costs could make it noticeably more expensive than its US price.
Why iPod Style Music Players Are Becoming Interesting Again
Smartphones can do almost everything, but sometimes that is also their biggest problem.
You might start listening to music, only to get interrupted by messages, calls, emails, social media alerts and endless scrolling.
A dedicated music player device without internet distractions gives music its own space again.
This push towards fewer distractions is also appearing in other gadgets. Even something as simple as Flipper’s Busy Bar, a do-not-disturb display that actually works has found users who simply want fewer interruptions during work or relaxation.
A separate music player can also help your smartphone battery last longer because your phone is no longer streaming music for hours.
It may also make sense for children or teenagers who want to listen to music without being given full access to a smartphone.
And when your phone is almost out of battery, your music can continue playing from a completely separate device.
What We Still Do Not Know About Sudo
There are still a few important details New Matter has not revealed.
The company says streaming services will be supported, but it has not announced exactly which services will work.
So if you specifically want a music player device with Spotify, there is no confirmation yet.
New Matter has also not revealed details about the DAC or supported Bluetooth codecs.
A DAC, or digital-to-analog converter, is the component that converts digital music into the audio signal you hear through headphones. The quality of the DAC can have an impact on sound quality.
Bluetooth codecs determine how music is transmitted wirelessly to Bluetooth earphones and headphones.
Codecs such as LDAC and aptX are commonly used for higher-quality Bluetooth audio, but Sudo’s current specifications do not mention which codecs it will support.
There is also no 4.4mm balanced headphone output.
This type of connection is popular among some audiophiles using premium wired headphones. Sudo instead uses the more common 3.5mm headphone jack.
The biggest concern right now may simply be the waiting period.
Shipping is expected to begin only in Q4 2027, which means the product is still at a fairly early stage.
The refundable reservation deposit reduces the risk for early buyers, but the specifications and features could still change before production begins.

Innioasis Y1
The Innioasis Y1 is probably the closest option if you mainly want that old iPod Classic look.
It has a familiar body design with a circular scroll wheel, while Bluetooth support allows it to connect with wireless earphones.
At around ₹7,000, it is one of the easier ways to get that classic wheel-based music player experience.
Innioasis Y2
The Innioasis Y2 is more suitable for listeners interested in higher-quality audio formats.
It supports FLAC, which is a lossless audio format that keeps the original music quality, along with DSD, another high-resolution format popular among audio enthusiasts.
Storage can also be expanded to 2TB using a microSD card.
AUDIOCULAR M71 and Cason Mini MP3 Player
The AUDIOCULAR M71 and Cason mini player are much more affordable options if you simply want to try using a dedicated music player.
Both support Bluetooth, FM radio and expandable storage.
They can be useful for workouts, walking, travelling or even for children who need music playback without a full smartphone.
Saregama Carvaan Mini
The Saregama Carvaan Mini takes a completely different approach.
Instead of focusing on an iPod-style design, it comes with a built-in speaker and 401 preloaded Hindi songs.
It also supports Bluetooth, FM and AUX, making it an easy-to-use music device for people who enjoy classic Hindi songs.
If you want something more premium, the Sony Walkman range offers high-resolution audio, good battery life and Android apps for streaming.
You can also browse more iPod style music players to compare different designs, storage options and prices.
Accessories for a Dedicated Music Player
A good music player experience also depends on what you connect to it.
A high-capacity microSD card gives you extra space to carry a much larger offline music library.
You can also pair the player with good wired earphones with a 3.5mm plug and use the headphone jack without worrying about Bluetooth battery life.
For wireless listening, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 with user-replaceable batteries are worth checking out at the premium end.
For something more affordable, check the CMF Buds Neo review of the ₹1,999 ANC earbuds.
ANC, or active noise cancellation, uses microphones to reduce surrounding sound. It can be especially helpful while travelling in traffic, trains or other noisy places.
Sudo Brings Back the Idea of a Simple Music Player
Sudo is not really trying to compete with your smartphone.
The idea is much simpler. It wants to give music its own dedicated device again, similar to what the Walkman and iPod once offered.
You get a physical wheel, a display, plenty of storage, wired and wireless audio support, and fewer distractions.
Whether New Matter can successfully deliver the final product will become clearer once shipping begins in late 2027.
But the attention around Sudo already shows that there is still interest in gadgets that do one thing well instead of trying to do everything.
Sometimes you just want to press play and listen.
