Sony FX5 Launched in India at Rs 5,09,990: 5K Open Gate and Internal RAW

The Sony FX5 cinema camera has arrived in India with a starting price of Rs 5,09,990. It brings internal 16-bit RAW video, 5K Open Gate recording, and a new stacked full-frame sensor to a compact 643g body. For filmmakers who need a lightweight camera without giving up professional video features, this is an interesting new addition to Sony’s Cinema Line.

Positioned between the FX3 and FX6, the FX5 is designed for everything from documentaries and wedding shoots to gimbal and vehicle-mounted filmmaking. Some features are inspired by Sony’s higher-end VENICE cinema cameras.

Sony FX5 Price in India and Availability

Sony introduced the FX5 in India on 2 November 2026, with sales starting on the same day. Buyers can choose between the standalone camera and a package with the XLR-H2 audio handle.

The bundle is worth considering if you regularly use XLR microphones. Buying the XLR-H2 separately costs considerably more than the Rs 52,000 difference between the two camera versions. The camera is offered through Sony authorised retailers, Sony Center, Alpha stores, Sony Camera Lounge, ShopatSC and electronics retailers.

Sony FX5 Design and New Full-Frame Sensor

At its heart is a new 16.6MP stacked Exmor RS full-frame CMOS sensor. A stacked design helps the sensor read images faster, which reduces the rolling-shutter distortion that can make quick camera movements appear wobbly.

Sony pairs this sensor with the BIONZ XR2 processor and its dedicated AI unit. This combination handles subject recognition, focusing and more accurate automatic white balance in different lighting.

5K Open Gate and Internal 16-Bit RAW Recording

The biggest attraction is Open Gate recording. Instead of using only a wide 16:9 portion of the sensor, the camera records its full 3:2 area. That gives editors room to create both a horizontal film and vertical social-media videos from the same footage.

The FX5 supports Open Gate in 5K at up to 60fps. For now, this mode requires Sony’s X-OCN format.

Another major improvement is internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW recording. X-OCN is Sony’s compressed RAW format, associated with its VENICE cameras. It retains greater flexibility for colour grading and exposure adjustments. The FX5 can record X-OCN LT, C1 and C2 without needing an external RAW recorder; the compressed C1 and C2 variants are intended to manage file sizes.

Sony plans firmware version 2.0 for August 2027 or later. It is expected to bring a vertical shooting interface, frame-grab feature and additional recording options. Those future modes are not available on the camera at launch.

Triple Base ISO and Dynamic Range

The FX5 offers base ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12800, making it easier to work in daylight, indoor conditions and low light while maintaining cleaner footage. Sony also claims more than 15 stops of latitude when using S-Log3.

For the first time in the FX series, the camera supports Dual Gain Shooting. It combines information gathered at two sensitivity levels to reduce noise in darker parts of an image.

Autofocus, Stabilisation and Display

The autofocus system has up to 759 phase-detection points and AI-assisted recognition for people, animals and birds. It can follow eyes, heads and bodies, including in challenging lighting.

There is 5-axis in-body image stabilisation for handheld recording. Sony says the improved roll correction offers roughly twice the correction range of the FX3, while Dynamic Active mode provides extra electronic stabilisation at up to 60fps.

The 3.5-inch touchscreen can tilt upward by 98 degrees, downward by 40 degrees, swing sideways by 180 degrees and rotate. Sony’s BIG6 screen brings frame rate, ISO, shutter, aperture, LUT and white balance controls into one convenient view.

Anamorphic de-squeeze options include 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2.0x. You can also save as many as 16 custom LUTs for monitoring your preferred colour look.

Audio, Battery and Connectivity

With the XLR-H2 handle attached, the FX5 supports up to four channels of 32-bit float audio at 96kHz. This format offers more flexibility when adjusting recordings that have unusually loud or quiet moments.

The new NP-SA100 2670mAh battery is rated for about 105 minutes in typical recording conditions, or up to 170 minutes of continuous recording. USB-C Power Delivery charging needs a 27W or higher power source.

An active cooling fan in a sealed chamber helps maintain uninterrupted 5K 60p recording. Fan settings include Auto, Minimum and Off during recording.

The FX3 remains a strong option for 4K production, especially when budget matters. The FX5 makes more sense for filmmakers who want 5K Open Gate, RAW recording inside the camera and another base ISO setting.

Sony FX5 vs Sony FX6

The FX6 caters more to traditional cinema and broadcast setups. It has an electronic variable ND filter and SDI output, both useful for larger productions. The lighter FX5 leaves out built-in ND and uses HDMI but brings Open Gate and internal X-OCN recording. For compact rigs, the FX5 may be the easier camera to handle.

Who Should Buy the Sony FX5?

The FX5 is aimed at wedding filmmakers, documentary teams, commercial video professionals and creators producing both landscape and portrait videos. Open Gate is particularly useful when one shoot needs to supply YouTube, Instagram and other platforms.

If your work focuses more on photography, look at the Sony Alpha 7R VI. For an all-in-one superzoom, there is the Sony RX10 V. The Sony FX30 is another way to enter the Cinema Line at a lower price.
