Photon Matrix Is a Laser Mosquito Killer That Feels Straight Out of a Video Game

Mosquito bats, coils and sprays may soon look a little old-fashioned. Photon Matrix takes a very different approach it uses LiDAR and a laser to find mosquitoes flying around and target them automatically.

It sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, but the idea is quite simple. The device scans the area around it, detects a flying mosquito and fires a precise laser at it.

There is no smoke, spray or strong chemical smell involved.

What Is the Photon Matrix Laser Mosquito Killer?

Photon Matrix is a portable mosquito-killing device developed by a Chinese startup. It combines LiDAR technology with a targeted laser system to detect and eliminate flying insects.

LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. The technology is already used in devices such as robot vacuum cleaners and self-driving vehicles to understand objects and distances around them.

Photon Matrix uses light pulses to continuously scan the surrounding area. When it detects a small flying object that matches the size and movement of a mosquito, the system tracks it and directs the laser towards it.

The company claims the entire process can happen in around three milliseconds. Under suitable conditions, it is also claimed to handle close to 30 mosquitoes per second.

That is certainly faster than chasing one around the bedroom with an electric bat.

How Does Photon Matrix Detect Mosquitoes?

The system mainly works in three stages.

LiDAR scanning: The device keeps scanning the area and measuring the distance between itself and nearby objects such as walls, furniture and other surfaces.

Automatic aiming: When the system notices a small moving object that looks like an insect, an internal galvanometer mirror quickly adjusts the laser direction.

Laser strike: Once the target position is confirmed, the laser is fired towards the mosquito.

The system is also designed not to fire when it cannot confirm a safe background or when it detects an object much larger than an insect.

So, at least according to the company, it is not supposed to start attacking every hand or elbow that enters the room.

Blue Laser and Infrared Versions

Photon Matrix is available with two different laser options. Their basic operation is similar, but one is visible while the other works more discreetly.

The main difference is whether you want to actually see the laser in action.

The blue laser version gives you the visual drama, while the infrared model quietly gets on with the job without turning your bedroom into a miniature sci-fi battle scene.

Is Photon Matrix Available in India?

Photon Matrix is currently being sold through its official international channels rather than as a regular retail product in India.

Most mosquito-killing gadgets easily available in India still use technologies such as UV light, electric grids, fans or suction.

If you want something available locally, there are several mosquito-control products that can be used around bedrooms, balconies and outdoor spaces.

Photon Matrix Laser Mosquito Killer Price in India

There is currently no official Photon Matrix price in India.

The product has mainly been offered internationally through crowdfunding and preorder channels. A device using LiDAR, automatic tracking and laser hardware will naturally cost much more than a normal electric mosquito killer.

A regular mosquito lamp in India can cost only a few hundred rupees. Photon Matrix belongs to a completely different category and is aimed more at people interested in futuristic smart gadgets.

Import costs and shipping could also make it considerably more expensive for Indian buyers.

What About Safety Around Kids and Pets?

A laser automatically firing around the house will naturally raise safety questions.

Photon Matrix says its system includes millimeter-wave radar that can recognise larger objects such as people, pets, hands and faces.

According to the company, the laser will stop firing if something larger than an insect appears in its path.

The device is also claimed to have an IP68 rating, which should help protect it against dust and water when used outdoors.

However, anyone importing such a new device should still use it carefully, particularly around children and pets.

Is a Laser Mosquito Killer Really Necessary?

Necessary? Probably not. Interesting? Absolutely.

Mosquitoes have been annoying humans for a very long time, and most solutions still involve sprays, coils, nets or electric bats.

Photon Matrix turns the same problem into something that feels more like a miniature air-defence system.

Whether it eventually gets an official launch in India remains to be seen. But a tiny box sitting in the corner and automatically hunting mosquitoes with a laser is definitely one of the more unusual smart-home ideas to appear in recent years.
