Meizu M2 review

The dual SIM 4G supported Meizu M2 is using the 64 bit MediaTek quad core powered smartphone running Lollipop with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. This handset comes with a 5 inch screen and gets power from a 2500 mAh battery. M2 is priced at ₹6,999.

M2 Unboxing
Inside the box you will find the Meizu M2 smartphone, user guide, warranty card, data cable and travel charger (5V ~ 2A). Earphone is not included.

Design and Display
The M2 is available in different colour options but the one I got for the review, the dark grey colour, looks awesome. Build quality and finishing is just too good for this price range. Body is made of plastic but looks like metal all credit to the excellent finishing.

Weight with non-removable battery is 129 grams and dimensions are 68.71 x 139.83 x 8.13mm. Handset is comfortable to hold and will fit comfortably in your palm. Power button and volume rocker are on the right side, SIM tray on the left, audio jack on the top and micro USB, mic and speaker out vent are placed at the bottom.

This is dual SIM handset. SIM slot 1 can house a Nano SIM and SIM 2 is hybrid slot, you can either use a micro SD card or a Nano SIM. Both the SIM slots support 4G.

M2 sports a 5 inch screen that comes protected with dragon trail glass and supports 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. Colour reproduction is good, touch is smooth and viewing angles are also pretty good though the screen gets a little dark from certain angles.

Native video calling is not supported, call recording option built-in into the dialler, there is LED notification and following sensors – Accelerometer, light, proximity, gyro and magnetic.

Memory, Storage and OS
M2 is loaded with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. On the first boot you will get about 11GB free space and 1GB free RAM. Apps by default will install on internal storage, but you can move some apps to external storage. OTG is supported.

This handset is running FlyMe OS 4.5.3l based on Android Lollipop 5.1 (64 Bit).

Performance
M2 houses the 64 Bit 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6735 quad core 28nm chipset coupled with Mali T720 GPU. Performance is smooth, it can play high end games in medium visual quality mode. Handset does tend to heat up when using heavy apps / games, but heat up well under control. Max battery temperature I encountered was 41 degrees.

Benchmark

Benchmark App Score
Quadrant 10953
Antutu (64 bit) 1st – 26184 , 2nd – 27276
Nenamark 2 54.6fps
Multi touch 10 point

Gaming
I played the Asphalt 8, this game got installed on the internal storage. The game was lagging in high visual quality mode. By default the game was set to medium quality mode and it played well in that mode. Check the gaming action in the video review.

Camera
The Meizu M2 comes with 13MP AF camera on the rear with flash and 5MP on the front. Both front and rear cameras can shoot FHD videos. Camera quality is average, could have been better. The minimum closeup focus distance is a bit away when compared with other handsets. If you check the sample images you will find that most of the common images that I usually shoot from a particular distance are blurry, if I move a little away from the subject, it will focus properly.

Camera modes supported – auto, manual, HDR, panorama, beauty, light field, scan (QR scanner) and slow motion.

Do check the sample images and video at the end of this review.

Others
No issues with 4G (2300 Band in India worked), 3G, WiFi, GPS (instant lock) and Bluetooth. In-call and loudspeaker sound is loud and clear.

There is a single dedicated navigation button, you can touch it (touch sensitive) to use it as the back button and press it to jump to the home screen.

Battery
There is a 2500 mAh non-removable battery that gives a decent 3 to 5 hours of backup – continuous moderate to heavy usage on a single charge. I got an easy 30 hours of battery backup with mixed usage.

Performance Time Battery drop % Battery Max Temp
Benchmark 19 Minutes 6% 37 degree
Gaming (Asphalt 8) 20 Minutes 10% 41 degree
FHD movie play with full brightness + Wi-Fi on 21 minutes 9% 41 degree
Wall Charge (on standby) 2 hours 35 minutes 10% to 100% (wall charge) 36 degree

Verdict
The Meizu M2 is 64 Bit quad core powered running 64 Bit Android Lollipop 5.1 (FlyMe 4.5.2). Performance is good, can play games in medium quality mode, camera quality is average and battery backup is decent. Key attraction is the awesome built quality and finishing (dark grey colour version).

There are other handsets in this price range that are better when it comes to the camera quality. Otherwise this is also a very good option.

Meizu M2 is available for ₹6,999.
