The Elephone P7000 was making waves recently, this octa core powered smartphone with finger print scanner was available for $160 for limited period only, as of now the handset is priced at $230. The P7000 is running Cyanogen Mod 12 based on Android 5.0 out of the box.

P7000 unboxing
Box pack Contents: P7000 handset, premium tempered glass (9 H+), battery of 3450 mAh capacity, data cable, travel charger (5V ~ 1A), user guide, screen guard and magnetic flip cover with S View window. Earphone is not included.

Design, Display and OS
The Elephone P7000 is using a metal frame made of Magnalium (Aluminum alloy + Magnesium). This metal provides extra level of protection, strength and its light weight. The handset is available in White, silver and golden color options. I got the white colour version but I guess the sliver and golden colour handsets would look much better. Back panel has got a light metallic texture, though the cover is made of plastic.

P7000 weight with battery is 180 grams and dimensions are 75.58 x 154.63 x 9.43 (mm). Build quality is very good, handset looks tough and the finishing is also pretty good. An yes there is a factory fitted screen guard (check video review).

Power button is on the right side, volume rocker on the left, speaker vents at the bottom (single speaker) and micro USB port plus audio jack on the top. The dedicated menu button on the front bottoms doubles up as LED indicator (you can choose different colors for specific notifications).

P7000 sports a 5.5 inch screen with full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. The screen is protected with corning gorilla glass 3 protection plus you also get extra screen guard and tempered glass for added protection.

Color reproduction, touch response and viewing angles are very good. There is accelerometer, light, proximity and magnetic sensors.

The Elephone P7000 is running Cyanogen MOD 12 based on android 5.0.

There are dual SIM slots a normal SIM 1 and a micro SIM 2. 4G is supported however the 2300 band is not supported and hence 4G will not work in India, for now. 3G works on both SIM’s.

Memory and Storage
There is 3GB on-board RAM and 16GB of internal storage. On the first boot you will get about 1.2GB free RAM and of the 16GB storage you will get about 12GB free space. The handset also comes with a micro SD card slot (up to 64GB). Apps are getting installed on internal storage and there is no option to move them to external card. OTG however is supported.

Performance and Benchmark
This smartphone is powered by MediaTek MT6752 64 Bit Cortex A53 octa core processor clocked at 1.7GHz with Mali T-760 GPU. Performance is very smooth, lag free and handset does not heat up much.

Benchmark

Benchmark App Score
Quadrant 20183
Antutu (64 bit) 1st – 39943 , 2nd – 37307
Nenamark 2 54.7 fps
Multi touch 5 point

Gaming
I tried the Asphalt 8; it got installed on the internal storage. Game play was very smooth in high visual quality mode. No issues found, hardware is powerful and can play many high end games.

Camera
The P7000 is using a 13MP AF camera with LED flash packed on the rear. Rear camera is using SONY IMX 214 sensor. Camera quality is above average. FHD video recording and play back is supported.

I tried playing 4K video using MX player in S/W mode, though the video was smooth the sound was getting cut off after ever few seconds.

Front camera is of 5MP resolution. Check the sample images and videos shot using this handset at the end of the review.

Others
Speaker sound output is loud and clear, in call sound quality is also very good. Native video calling is not supported. The flip cover comes with S view window and you can setup it up to show an analog clock or digital clock. For some reason it takes time for the clock to show up once the flip is closed.

The P7000 comes with touch ID finger print scanner. All you need to do is tap the finger print scanner, the handset will detect and process the finger print almost instantly, it is as fast as swiping the finger on the screen to unlock.

It’s a 360 degree finger print sensor, so really does not matter at what angle you tap the sensor. Also since the scanner is on the rear you can easily operate the handset with single hand.

By default a black wallpaper / theme is used if you change the colour / theme you will know why. There are black borders on the screen and they look really bad.

Battery
The P7000 comes with a removable 3450 mAh battery that does take a lot of time to charge using 5V ~ 1A adapter, however the battery backup is very good you can expect about 6 to 8 hours of continuous usage Moderate to Heavy on a single charge.

Performance Time Battery drop % Battery Max Temp
Benchmark 15 Minutes 4% 41 degree
Gaming (Balance mode) 22 Minutes 6% 41 degree
FHD movie play with full brightness + Wi-Fi on 26 minutes 5% 37 degree
Wall Charge (on standby) 4 hours 14% to 100% (charge) 33 degree

Verdict
The Elephone P7000 no doubt is a powerful handset that is running Android 5.0 (Cyanogen MOD) with 3GB RAM. Performance is very smooth and camera quality is above average. Battery backup is also very good.
