WhatsApp Bill Payments Launched in India: Pay Electricity, Gas, FASTag and More Inside WhatsApp

Paying different bills often means opening several apps for electricity, gas, FASTag, credit cards and other services. WhatsApp is now making this process much easier.

WhatsApp bill payments has officially launched in India, allowing users to pay regular household bills without leaving the messaging app.

Meta announced the new feature on September 3, 2026. It is one of the biggest payment-related updates WhatsApp has introduced for Indian users.

The service works through Bharat Connect, which was earlier known as BBPS or Bharat Bill Payment System. It is a government-backed payment network already used by many banking and fintech apps in India.

In simple words, Bharat Connect acts as a common system that connects bill providers with payment apps. WhatsApp is now using the same network to fetch and process bills.

What Is WhatsApp Bill Payments

WhatsApp bill payments is a new built-in feature that allows users to find their bill provider, check the amount due and make the payment directly from WhatsApp.

Payments can be made using UPI, debit cards or credit cards.

This means users do not need separate apps or different login details for electricity providers, gas companies, insurance services or other billers.

The option can be accessed through the rupee icon shown on the WhatsApp home screen.

Tapping this icon opens the payments section, where users can check bills, previous transactions and supported payment categories.

WhatsApp Supports Over 22,000 Billers

Meta says the new feature supports a large number of bill providers in India from the beginning.

The feature brings WhatsApp closer to payment apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm, which already offer bill payment services.

However, WhatsApp has one major advantage. A large number of users already keep the app open throughout the day for messages and calls.

How to Pay Bills on WhatsApp

Paying a bill through WhatsApp is fairly simple.

StepWhat to Do
1Open WhatsApp and tap the rupee icon
2Choose the bill category and select your biller
3Enter and confirm your account or consumer details
4Check the bill amount fetched by WhatsApp
5Select UPI, debit card or credit card
6Confirm and complete the payment

After paying a bill, WhatsApp saves the biller details for future payments.

This means you will usually not need to enter the consumer number again when the next bill arrives.

Useful Features Included With WhatsApp Bill Payments

WhatsApp is offering more than just a simple bill payment option. The payments section also works like a small bill management dashboard.

Household bills summary shows bills that have already been paid along with bills that are still pending. Billers previously used on WhatsApp can also appear directly on the payments page for faster access.

Multiple accounts under one biller can be useful for people managing bills for more than one house, office or family member. Different connections from the same provider can be added and managed in one place.

Popular payment categories are shown directly on the main payments page. Users can also open the complete category list if the required service is not immediately visible.

When Will WhatsApp Bill Payments Reach Your Phone

Meta says WhatsApp bill payments is being rolled out gradually across India.

The feature will become available to Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

If the rupee icon is not visible on your WhatsApp home screen yet, the feature may not have reached your account.

It is also a good idea to update WhatsApp through the Play Store or App Store so that you are running the latest version.

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head at Meta India, said the company wants paying bills on WhatsApp to feel as simple as sending a message.

The idea is to bring the same convenience users already get from WhatsApp chats and UPI payments to regular household bills.
