Xiaomi launched the next handset in the Redmi series, the Redmi Note 4 powered by SD 625. The price starts from Rs. 9,999. Is this handset better than the Note 3, let’s find out.

Redmi Note 4 review

Redmi Note 4 sails on MIUI 8 based on Android marshmallow. It will get Android Nougat update later on.

Memory and Storage

Note 4 comes with 2GB or 3GB RAM with 32GB ROM or you can go for the 4GB RAM variant with 64GB ROM. OTG is supported. On first boot you will get around 56GB free space and on the 4GB RAM variant you will get around 2 GB free RAM.

Redmi Note 4 buttons and ports

The Snapdragon 625 octa core 64 bit processor clocked at 2GHz with Adreno 506 GPU does an excellent job. Though the benchmark scores are lower than Redmi Note 3 you will hardly notice any difference in the performance.

Best part is that the handset does not heat up. The maximum battery temperature I encountered was 37 degrees. In fact when compared with other handsets the battery temperature is way low (also not to forget its winter season), but still temp is lower compared with other handsets.

AnTuTu : 61862 / 12860  2nd time 62428  / 12925
Nenamark 2 : 60.1fps
Disk Speed : 216 MB/s read / 151 MB/s write
Multi Touch :10 point

Both Modern Combat 5 and Asphalt 8 games were playable, smooth, no lags. The best part was the handset battery temperature – max battery temperature I encountered was 37 degrees. .

Redmi Note 4 did not heat up when playing games. Perfect for gaming users, especially those who spend a lot of time playing games on their mobile phone.

There is 13MP camera on the back and 5MP on the front. Camera quality is above average (make sure to update the OS / also check this page for Redmi Note 4 camera review video). Note 4 can shoot FHD videos. The hardware is powerful, it can play 4K, but the camera app gives max 1080p recording option.

The finger print sensor on back is fast and accurate. Sound is loud, did not find any issues with VoLTE, reliance Jio worked. WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS worked well.

No others issues, sound is loud, WiFi (dual band), GPS, Bluetooth, IR worked well.

There is a 4100 mAh non-removable battery. Battery life is awesome – you will get 9 to 10 hours of non-stop moderate to heavy usage. With mixed moderate usage you can expect an easy 2 days of battery life.

Redmi Note 4 Battery Performance (time / battery % drop / estimated battery temperature)

  • Running Benchmark app – 12 minutes / 2% / 33 degree
  • Asphalt 8 game play – 19 minutes / 3% / 37 degree
  • 4K video playback with full brightness (WiFi /4G on) – 27 minutes / 5% / 35 degrees

It took me 2 hours 30 minutes to charge the handset from 0% to 100% using wall charger.

If you compare Redmi Note 3 and the Redmi Note 4, benchmark scores are higher on Redmi Note 3, but in real usage scenario you will hardly find any differences. Battery life is even better on the Note 4. Also heat up is much less on the Note 4 when compared with Note 3.

Redmi Note 4 design

If you have used the Redmi Note 3, you can upgraded to Redmi Note 4.

Overall Rating 4.1 out of 5

Redmi Note 4 price in India starts from Rs. 9,999 (2GB/32GB), Rs. 10,999 (3GB/32GB) and Rs. 12,999 (4GB/64GB).

  1. I got 3gb RN4 on second sale from FP. When i compared RN4 with my another Micromax A117 magnus, the CAMERA and DISPLAY quality is lesser than A117.
Also cross checked with Lenovo K6 power, i felt the same on RN4.

    with regards,

  2. I received this mobile today only there are two openings at the bottom for speakers but sound is coming from only one side. Is there any problem with my device or generally this device comes with single speaker ? kindly clear my doubt sir.

  3. Review update: I updated the handset and clicked images again, you can check the samples attached, download and check on your PC. Slight improvement but camera quality is still average.

  4. Any one remember Micromax A117? Off topic, abour 2.5D curved glass. I remember I had bought Micromax A117 as Gogi highly recommend it. It was like 4 years back, and no one talked about it then and now suddenly every phone is flaunting it as a premium feature. A117 was probably the best phone launched at that time.

  5. 2 Questions

    1) why the hell OS use nearly 50% of ram (from first boot).

    2) u mistakenly missed 3 in “Camera quality is average, was expecting better or at least as good as the Redmi Note.” or u really comparing RN4 camera with RN (first generation)

        1. I have used le eco le2 but bettery performance is very poor but le2 support fast charging thats plus point

  6. ya same thing I want to say eui …not cool ui but as I said in my before comment heating issue is there in cool1 but for performance daily uses eui is good and fast…

  7. gogi bro I want know whether this set support 5GHz wifi network like in RN3. Please have look and do replay bro.

      1. 5ghz band is very useful and high data rate speed and bandwidth. We can play multiplayer games via wifi without wired lan and more traffic in LAN is easily handled by 5ghz wifi.. but it also needs 5ghz router(802.11ac).

  8. In most of the other reviews, I see the camera samples from redmi note 4 are better than redmi note 3. After OTA update, camera performance might have improved. Please update us on this soon.

    1. I did check for update before starting the review, there was none. But now I checked with Xiaomi and also checked update, there is one now. Will update soon and re-check the camera part.

      1. R/sir
Agar possible ho ske to kal afternoon tak new camera samples upload kar dena bcoz mu moto g4 plus will b delivered tomorrow afternoon…so that i can decide wheather to go with note4 or receive my g4 plus….

Will b highly thankful to u

        1. Hi sorry not possible, I will be updating and coming up with conclusion on 25. Am travelling and cannot update on the move.

          1. Never mind, thanks anyway sir as I have cancelled my order fr g4 plus and wait for your camera update section, thanks again.

        1. Very slight, the blurriness has reduced, but still I the version is same MIUI (stable), I guess MIUI is out, have not got that update.

          1. is the version of miui 8 stable which comes in the consumer products and 7.1.19 is the public beta version of miui 8

  9. But the tech.firstpost reviewer says that he could see an overall improvement in the quality… ?

    1. cool 1 has heating issue while gaming …cool ui is not well optimised….so better to go for redmi note 4

      1. Cool 1 runs eUI not cool UI and eUI is clean and performs good. But the fact that it heats pretty much is the reason why most buyers are avoiding it.

      2. I’m waiting for the 64 GB version of the Cool 1 instead, if it ever launches in India. Would prefer it over the 64 GB version of Redmi Note 4, even for a couple of thousand bucks extra.

        1. Better to go with Honor 6x 4gb Ram/64gb ROM version as everything is good and balanced in 6x… I will also buy it on 2Feb.

  10. Happy with my Redmi Note 3. Redmi Note 4 is very much a downgrade. Would rather wait for Redmi Note 5 with expected features such as 5.5 inches AMOLED Display, Gorilla Glass, Snapdragon 660 Processor, Dual Cameras, 4500 mAh Battery, Pure Dual SIM with dedicated MicroSD Slot etc. ?

    1. Xiaomi has no ideas to launch Redmi Note 5.Xiaomi is planning to launch Redmi Pro 2.Rumored specifications (almost real)
5.5 Inches OLED display,4500mAh battery 12MP dual pixel camera by Sony,no information about processor but pricing for 6GB RAM 128GB ROM is 1699¥(Rs.16,999)

  11. Mr Rana seems to be on Holiday in Rajasthan!..i m disappointed at camera performance of this phone, not 2017 cam quality Xiaomi. I guess will now look hard at Honor 6X 64 GB version, because a 2017 phone must have a better cam than Redmi note 4. Will not buy today. Cool 1 iss another item kn table, but 32 GB only version available leaves not much space for use.

    1. Exactly! Even I’m eagerly waiting for the 64 GB version of the Cool 1 instead, if it ever launches in India. Would prefer it over the 64 GB version of Redmi Note 4, even for a couple of thousand bucks extra.

  12. @Gogi, I was planning to buy Redmi Note 4, but then I was not sure if I would get one today. Went ahead and ordered LeEco Le 2 on Snapdeal for 9300 after all discounts. I was planning to try for RN4 today, if I were lucky (3 GB & 32 GB model), which of the 2 would be better according to you.
Please note, my usage is limited to calls, emails, browsing and multimedia. No gaming…

  13. Mi promoting this phone over note 3 bcoz of battery back up & camera quality. But what we have seen here still it is poor comparing RN3.

  14. Gogi! I have doubt that is this handset capable to do multitask? I mean switching between heavy games? Plz do test

  15. R/sir
If u dont mind can u provide a sound comparision of sound quantity in speaker of phone fr listening to music and videos…just as u reviewing note4 having dual speakers at bottom so plz tell wheather it has higher volume than note3 or not..

    If possible then plz….

    1. No it will not support lte +lte simultaniously only one sim at a time, other one will be 3g calls only according to mi.com/in go to the note 4 page and under specs see dual sim use

  16. Its really sad to see the camera is not even par with Redmi Note 3.

Redmi Note 4 is shipping either with Sony camera sensor or Samsung sensor.

May be the device used during the launch is having sony sensor and your device is having samsung camera sensor. I dont know which company sensor is working great. Opposite can also be true.

Can you please install CPU info app and confirm the device camera sensor so that we can come to a conclusion and try to avoid that model.

    Thanks in advance…

  17. CAMERA , A72 cores ,GPU , H.265 recording, LTE bands, wifi everything is downgraded truth is that they just dumped their left JUNK redmi 4 prime with just a bigger screen

  18. Camera performance is improved in RN4 then RN3. It has improved sensor which produces accurate color then RN3 specially in low light scenario. Its true that SoC is downgraded to 625 but it’s based on 14 nm technology which improves its performance rather then 28 nm technology of SoC 650/652. This is the main reason of using this cheapest in latest mid-range cellphone by many brands eg. lenovo p2,moto g5 plus(upcoming) etc. I hope this little info. Will help many of you.

Gogi sir if u make a video on 28/14/10 nm SoC then it helps us to better understand the differences. Thank you.

  19. Still I find RN3 & LeEco le 2 better than this , only positive is battery backup.
Even MI MAX would be better choice than this.
    What you think guys?

    1. MI Max Prime is slightly higher priced but it might be better choice considering 128GB, SD652, 4GB, 4850 battery, 16 MP Cam, true gorilla glass 3, 2.5 D etc. It’s in stock now gold 128 GB

  20. gogi what will be better in terms of overall performance between coolpad cool 1 and redmi note 4???

  21. Redmi Note 3 camera sucks, so this must suck even more.
And i think heating depends on each respective device, Because my RN3 does NOT heat up at all.
    But Ram management sucks.

    1. Exactly.
Don’t understand why their image processing software and RAM management sucks so much. They have good hardwares. ?

  22. This time xiaomi really gives a Dumped S##t in india.. camera is the main thing but its also average, processor is downgraded and who knows in summer it heats or not..

  23. Glad to see that review, as all the reviewers calling its camera a little better than note 3, but you call it note 3 camera is better, so please do a camera comparison of both..

      1. Gogi sir is right camera is not good of RN4. You will know it when you download and look it at your tab or laptop, even out door images are not good. Rather I love Redmi 1S. I have seen RN4 with mediatek processor and camera quality is not good in it also. Looking forward to RN4 vs Cool pad Cool1 review. I think for camera lover dual camera mobile will be best. Gogi! shall we wait for others or better to go with Cool pad Cool 1?

        1. Cool 1 or Honor 6x, depending on the price. If you are getting Cool 1 with some offer the go ahead.

    1. I would say go for RN3. Its much more tested model. Has more powerfull processor and better camera. Battery life is good on both device.
