TRAI’s 100 SMS’s per day has already been implemented and many mobile consumers who were fed up with multiple unwanted SMS’s are now happy. However the new rule has not stopped the spammers who have for now discarded the SMS techniques but have found a new method of getting sensitive information i.e. using the Missed calls technique.

How does, the Missed calls technique work?

The main intension of a spammer is to get out sensitive information (phishing) from the unsuspecting mobile user. The user will get an international call usually happens at night and after few rings the call will cut off. Since the missed call originated from an international number the user will most likely call back and a fraudster would then claim he is a representative of the carrier and that the user has won some prize and in that process will get the user to reveal sensitive information for calming the prize.

TRAI has revealed that most of these calls originate from Sierra Leone (+232), Belarus (+374) and Pakistan (+92). Mobile users are advised if they receive missed calls from these countries or in fact from any unknown number, simply ignore them.

Mobile subscribers need to be alert and avoid following trap to such malicious activities.

  • If you receive any calls from unknown number or international numbers with country code +375 or +92 do not respond to such number and also avoid calling them if you have received a missed call.
  • In case if you picked up the call or have called back do not disclose any sensitive information or personal information. Also do not dial any international number to claim the prize money.
  • If you receive any SMS’s with unknown number prompting you to give a call back, just ignore it.

If you receive suspicious calls from such country codes then call your carrier customer care and report the same immediately.
