Getting into an IIT or NIT is hard enough. Now imagine over 16,000 students from more than 5,000 institutions applying for a second, very different kind of selection, one where the entrance test is how well you can build a gaming community. That is exactly what happened with BGMI Campus MVP, a new student leadership programme from KRAFTON India, and only 150 candidates made the cut.
If you play BATTLEGROUNDS MOBILE INDIA (BGMI) or know someone who does, this is worth paying attention to. It is not another in-game event or a cosmetic drop. It is KRAFTON handing real responsibility, and real rewards, to student “ambassadors” who will run BGMI communities on their own campuses for the next three months.
What Exactly Is BGMI Campus MVP
BGMI Campus MVP is a 90-day programme where selected college students act as local leaders for the BGMI community at their institution. Think of it less like a marketing campaign and more like a student council, except the “council” organises gaming tournaments, films content, hosts meetups, and represents their college in nationwide rivalries.
The numbers tell you how selective this was. KRAFTON brought in 150 student ambassadors from 17 IITs and 28 NITs, chosen out of a pool of over 16,000 applicants. Another 100 students were shortlisted as a reserve, so the competition for a spot was genuinely intense.
Srinjoy Das, Director of Marketing and Product Management at KRAFTON India, framed the programme as the next stage of BGMI’s shift away from being “just a game.” According to the announcement, the company wants campuses to become spaces where students connect, compete, and build friendships around BGMI, rather than just logging in for a few matches and logging off.
Breaking Down the Three Phases
Instead of one long, vague mandate, KRAFTON has structured Campus MVP into three clear phases, each with its own goals and deadlines.
| Phase | Duration | Focus | Ambassador Targets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Foundation | 15 Jul to 14 Aug 2026 | Onboarding players, running Classic Match sessions | Publish at least 2 in-game content reels |
| Phase 2: Expansion | 15 Aug to 14 Sep 2026 | Team Deathmatch (TDM) tournaments, one offline meetup | Grow player cohort to 20 |
| Phase 3: Championship | 15 Sep to 14 Oct 2026 | Inter-department tournaments | Represent campus in national inter-institute rivalry matches |
A quick explainer for anyone new to the terms here. Classic Match is BGMI’s standard battle royale mode with the familiar drop, loot, and last-team-standing format. Team Deathmatch (TDM) is a faster, smaller-scale mode built around straight kills rather than survival, which makes it easier to run as a quick campus tournament. Inter-department rivalry simply means students from different departments within the same college compete against each other before the college as a whole takes on rival institutions.
By the time Phase 3 wraps up in October, the ambassadors who performed best will have led their campuses through onboarding, live tournaments, community content, and national-level competition, all inside one semester.
What Ambassadors and Their Recruits Actually Win
This is where Campus MVP moves from “student volunteering” to something closer to a paid gig, minus the salary. KRAFTON has built a Rank Point (RP) system where ambassadors earn points for completing tasks across the three phases, and those points unlock tiered rewards.
Early tiers bring welcome kits and food or e-commerce vouchers. Move further up and the rewards shift toward actual gaming gear, in-game UC (BGMI’s in-game currency, short for Unknown Cash), trigger sets, and premium headphones. At the very top sits a Level 3 backpack, BGMI’s in-game term for its highest-tier storage item, awarded to the strongest performers.
The five best ambassadors nationally will reach Conqueror rank, the highest competitive tier in BGMI, and walk away with rewards worth up to INR 15,000. Even players who are not ambassadors but get recruited into these campus communities are covered. Winners of Phase 1 Classic Matches receive food vouchers, Phase 2 TDM and offline-event winners get premium vouchers, and Phase 3 inter-department winners take home BGMI merchandise hampers.
Why KRAFTON Is Betting on Students, Not Ads
It would have been simpler for KRAFTON to run another paid marketing push. Instead, Campus MVP hands the job to students who already have the trust of their peers, which tends to work better than any banner ad ever could.
This fits a pattern. Over the past year, BGMI marked five years in India, expanded partnerships with content creators, and pushed its universe into live, offline events like HOT DROP. Campus MVP is the natural next step, taking that same “beyond the screen” approach and pointing it at India’s engineering campuses specifically, where a large chunk of BGMI’s core player base already studies.
KRAFTON has also said the top performers and lessons from this first run will shape how Campus MVP expands to more institutions in future phases, so this initial batch of 150 is essentially a pilot for something much bigger.
Gear Worth Considering If You Are Grinding for Campus MVP Rewards
Since trigger sets and headphones sit among the mid-tier rewards, and because plenty of BGMI players outside the programme use similar gear anyway, here are a few categories worth a look if you want an edge in Classic Match and TDM sessions.
| Gear | Why It Helps | Where to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile gaming trigger sets | Faster aim and fire response without covering the screen | Check trigger sets on Amazon |
| Gaming headphones with mic | Clearer footstep audio and squad callouts in TDM | Browse gaming headphones on Amazon |
| Phone cooling clip | Keeps frame rates stable during long tournament sessions | See phone coolers on Amazon |
| Gaming backpack | Handy for carrying gear to offline campus meetups | View gaming backpacks on Flipkart |
The Bigger Picture
Campus MVP is a small programme in terms of headcount, 150 ambassadors out of a country with millions of BGMI players, but it signals where KRAFTON wants to take the game’s community strategy. Rather than treating campuses as just another demographic to advertise to, the company is turning select students into actual stakeholders with rewards, recognition, and a path to national competition.
Whether this scales into something bigger, as KRAFTON has hinted, will depend on how this first cohort performs over the next three months. Phase 1 is already underway, so the early signs should start showing up well before October’s national rivalry matches.
