The Coolapd Mega 2.5D looks premium. It is using a metal frame and the back panel though made of plastic has got metallic finishing. I got the gold colour for the review. The handset looks awesome specially on the back side with almost full metallic feel.

Coolpad Mega 2.5D as the name says sports a 5.5 inch screen using 2.5D curved glass and supporting 1280 x 720 pixels resolution – there is no mention of glass protection, though it did survive a minor (pin) scratch test. Color reproduction, viewing angles and touch response is good.

Memory and Storage

There is 3GB RAM and 16GB internal storage space. On the first boot you will get around 11GB free space and 1.3GB free RAM. OTG is supported.

Performance

Inside the hood the Mega 2.5D is using MediaTek MT6735 64 bit cortex A53 quad core processor clocked at 1GHz with Mali T720 GPU. Performance is smooth but handset is not that powerful when it comes to gaming. Handset also does not heat up much, maximum battery temperature I encountered was 37 degrees.

Coolpad Mega 2.5D Benchmark

  • Quadrant – 9916
  • Antutu –  25101 / 25107 | 3D score –  2078
  • Nenamark 2 – 52.7fps
  • Internal storage Speed – Read (58MB/s), Write (58MB/s)
  • Multi Touch – 5 Point

The Modern Combat 5 game lagged at initial levels. Asphalt 8 game was playable, smooth in medium visual quality mode. Check video review.

Others

Speaker sound is loud and clear, no issues with in-call speaker. 4G, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth worked well. I also did not find any issues with network signal / quality.

Battery

There is a 2500 mAh non-removable battery that does a very good job. On a full charge you can get 5 to 9 hours of non-stop moderate to heavy usage. For normal mixed usage the handset will last for 2 days, for mixed usage one to one and a half days and for heavy usage up to 24 hours.

Coolpad Mega 2.5D Battery Performance (time / battery % drop / estimated battery temperature).

  • Running Benchmark app – 11 minutes / 2% / 33 degrees
  • Asphalt 8 + MC5 game play – 30 minutes / 10% / 34 degrees
  • FHD video playback with full brightness (WiFi /4G on) – 25 minutes / 8% / 34 degrees.

It took me 1 hour 45 minutes to charge the handset using wall charger from 8% to 100% (using 5V / 1.5A travel charger provided in the box).

Verdict

The Coolpad Mega 2.5D could have been a good handset for Rs. 6,999 had the Redmi 3S not been launched, unfortunately for the price the Redmi 3S is no doubt a much better option.

Rating 3 out of 5.

Coolpad Mega 2.5D is available for Rs. 6,999.
