Alexa+ Is Live in India: Free Early Access to Amazon’s New AI Assistant That Understands Hinglish

Amazon has officially launched Alexa+ in India, giving the familiar Alexa assistant a major AI upgrade. Starting September 16, 2026, Alexa+ can have more natural conversations, remember the context of what you are talking about and handle more complex tasks.

This is much more than a regular Alexa update. Alexa+ uses generative AI and has been adapted for Indian users who often switch between English, Hindi and Hinglish while speaking.

If you already use an Echo speaker, Fire TV or the Alexa app, here is what Alexa+ changes and how you can access it during the free Early Access period.

What Is Alexa+ and How Is It Different From the Old Alexa?

Generative AI allows Alexa+ to understand normal, open-ended conversations instead of relying mainly on fixed voice commands.

With the older Alexa, users often had to phrase a command in a particular way and sometimes repeat the wake word before every request.

Alexa+ is designed to feel more conversational. You can say “Alexa” once and continue talking, ask follow-up questions, change the subject and even switch between languages during the same conversation.

For example, you could ask Alexa to find a song while mixing Hindi and English in the same sentence. Alexa+ is designed to understand what you mean rather than simply matching specific words.

Alexa+ India Launch Date and Free Early Access

Alexa+ became available in India on September 16, 2026 through Amazon’s Early Access programme.

During this Early Access period, eligible customers can use Alexa+ for free.

Alexa+ works with supported Echo smart speakers and displays, Fire TV devices and the Alexa mobile app. Existing customers can visit Amazon’s Alexa+ page to check whether their device is compatible.

Another way to get Alexa+ immediately is to buy a supported new Echo or Fire TV device that comes ready for the new assistant.

Alexa+ Supports English, Hindi and Hinglish

One of the most useful features for Indian users is support for English, Hindi and Hinglish.

More Indian languages are expected to be added later.

Alexa+ does not require you to speak in perfectly structured sentences. You can change your request halfway through, ask another question based on the previous answer or move from Hindi to English without starting again.

That should make Alexa feel more natural in Indian homes where people regularly mix two or more languages while speaking.

Smarter Home Control With Alexa+

Alexa+ can also control compatible smart home products from brands including Atomberg, Qubo, Dreame and Wipro.

The commands can be more natural as well.

Instead of remembering the exact name of an air conditioner, you could simply say something like “it is too hot in this room.” Alexa+ can understand the situation and control the relevant smart device.

Similarly, saying “clean the floor” could start a connected robot vacuum.

Users can also combine several actions into a single routine. A command such as “movie time” could dim the lights, close smart curtains and switch on the television together.

Alexa+ Can Recognise Different Family Members

Alexa+ uses Voice ID and Visual ID to identify different members of a household and personalise the experience for each person.

For example, Alexa+ could remember that one member of the family prefers vegetarian food and take that into account while suggesting recipes.

It can also learn different entertainment preferences, including the music or shows each person likes.

Alexa+ can use household routines too. This could include switching lights on around sunset or reminding someone to lock the doors before going to bed.

Amazon Shopping Gets More Useful With Alexa+

Shopping is another area where Amazon is expanding Alexa’s abilities.

Alexa+ can create shopping lists based on household preferences, notify users about price drops on wishlist products, compare product features and provide summaries of verified customer reviews.

Amazon also plans to connect Amazon Now with Alexa+.

Once available, customers will be able to search for groceries or everyday items, select what they want and place the order using their voice. Amazon Now can then handle delivery within minutes in supported areas.

Alexa+ Understands Indian Expressions and Desi Slang

Amazon has also trained Alexa+ to better understand the way people speak in India.

It can understand expressions such as “dhai baje” for time and “ek paav” for measurements.

Alexa+ is also familiar with Indian relationship terms such as bhanja, bhateeji, jethani and devar.

The assistant can use common expressions like “theek hai” and “arrey” naturally where appropriate. Amazon has also trained it around popular Indian topics such as Bollywood and cricket.

According to Amazon, teams of scientists, engineers and language experts in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai played an important role in developing the technology behind Alexa+ for India.

Alexa+ Uses Amazon Bedrock and Multiple AI Models

Alexa+ is powered by Amazon Bedrock, Amazon’s platform for working with different generative AI models.

Rather than depending on a single AI model for every request, the system can choose from more than 70 large language models, including models developed by Amazon and Anthropic.

The idea is simple: different tasks need different levels and types of intelligence.

Turning on a smart plug is very different from planning a holiday. Alexa+ can route a request to the model or service that is better suited for that particular job.

The platform also connects these AI models with hundreds of services and compatible devices.

Privacy and Security Controls

Amazon has included a Privacy dashboard where Alexa+ users can review their previous interactions.

Customers can check what Alexa heard, review shared attachments and decide how long their voice recordings should be stored.

Echo devices also continue to include physical controls for microphones and cameras.

There is also a visual indicator that lets users know when Alexa is actively listening.

Alexa+ Price After Early Access

Alexa+ is free during the Early Access period.

After Early Access ends, access will depend on the type of Amazon membership you have.

Customers with a full Amazon Prime membership will continue to receive Alexa+ at no additional cost.

Users with Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition or no Prime membership will not have Alexa+ automatically renewed.

They will need to either upgrade to the full Prime membership or subscribe to Alexa+ separately.

The standalone Alexa+ subscription is expected to cost INR 2,000 per month.

Alexa+ Supported Devices in India

Amazon has also introduced newer Echo hardware designed with Alexa+ in mind.

The lineup includes the Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio. These devices offer improved processing power and newer sensors to better support the AI-powered Alexa experience.

Amazon is also planning to bring Alexa+ to web browsers.

Conversations will eventually move between devices as well. You could start asking Alexa+ something on an Echo Show in the kitchen and continue the same conversation later through the Alexa mobile app without explaining everything again.

Alexa+ looks like Amazon’s biggest Alexa upgrade so far, especially for Indian households where Hinglish and mixed-language conversations are part of everyday life. The free Early Access period also gives existing Alexa users a chance to try the new AI features before deciding whether they are genuinely more useful than the old command-based Alexa.
