To get most out of Google Adsense it is important to experiment different ad sizes and placements. If you are using WordPress there are many WordPress themes that are Adsense optimized you can try those. In general here are some tips that will help your website make more revenue.

Top 5 Google Adsense Tips for higher CTR

  1. Put one or two Adsense ads on each page
Avoid using too many Adsense ads on the page instead try to limit the ads to one or two per page. That way you get a higher page CTR.
  2. Text or Image Adsense ads, choose both
Though text ads do better than image ads it is worth to try out what works best. Text ads can easily mix with the site content where as image ads may look quite compelling. So why not make use of both!
  3. Blend your Adsense ads with the site design
Instead of using the default Adsense colour scheme make sure you change the colour pattern so that it looks like part of your site. That way the likelihood of visitors clicking the ads on your site increases.
  4. Do not make your site look like a MFA site
This is the common mistake I find on most sites. They have just too many Adsense ads placed ATF (Above the Fold). When a visitor visits your site they are looking for content and throwing up too many ads may turn them off. There are many sites with good content but to read the content users often have to scroll down because the ads take up a lot of space. On many sites you will find the top area assigned for 728×90 Adsense ad, the right or the left sidebar again assigned for the 336×280 or 300×250 Adsense slot, then again after the story title another 336×280 Adsense ad placed there. These sites even if they have good content may easily be tagged as MFA (made for adsense) sites. So make sure that your page ATF area is not too much populated with just ads.
  5. For best results try manually placing ads within the content, if possible
Manually place one Adsense ad within the content most preferably somewhere in the middle. That way when the user is reading the content they will see the ads and most probably will click it, moreover your site will look different and the ad placement when used manually will be at different location on each page.

Try out the above tips and you will find some improvement in CTR. Once you make the changes monitor your Adsense performance for about a month, before you conclude.

AvG CTR depends on the content niche and also the ads available it varies from site to site. There are users who have reported above 10 but on an avg if you get between 2 to 5 you are doing well.

I really liked your advise about the MFA Site. I have been doing this mistake and today i realise, thats the reason for high bounce rate of my website.
