How to choose the right SEO plugin or SEO enabled Theme for WordPress

Ask any webmaster or a blogger and they will tell you how important SEO is for survival. Thankfully you do not need to work on the software part as SEO can be enabled using a plugin or an SEO enabled theme on WordPress. However you still need to know what SEO is and fill in the blank where required.

By using a SEO Plugin or SEO enabled theme the post area gets populated with few more variables that are important from search engine point of view. Basically certain features are added that gives you more control and additional options.

Any SEO Plugin or Theme should feature the following.

Canonical Tag

Most of the WordPress themes do come with the Canonical tag built in which will add the actual site URL and helps avoid duplicate content. Any external site or even internal links can point to a page on your site with extra parameters included in the URL, this does not affect the output but can confuse the search engines which might consider it as duplicate content and may penalize the website. To avoid such a situation canonical Tag is important.

Simply activating canonical Tag option in WordPress is enough and no additional inputs are required from your site, it is as simple as that.

Custom Title Tag

This is an optional SEO field but can be used effectively. When you create a new post you add the post title and in the custom title tag field you can leave it blank to use the default page title or add another title a bit different from the default one. This way you get to use two titles the meta title that you see on the top of browser and another one at the beginning of the post. Many sites have benefited from this technique.

Meta Description and Meta Keywords

Both these options are not available in your default WordPress Theme. You can get these by using all in one SEO plugin or using an SEO enabled theme like Thesis. By default WordPress will automatically populate the description from your content and will use the tags that you might have added as keywords.

With SEO Meta Description and Meta Keywords you get a change to add what you want, it makes the whole page unique and gives you better control and helps improve ranking.

Robots Meta tags

This is a very useful feature that gives you an option to enable noindex, nofollow and noarchive on individual post or page. If you are posting some content that may benefit the users but may not be considered as important by search engines you can use these options. That way you avoid getting low quality content into SERP which helps build up reputation.
