Summary:

Low cost Allwinner A13 (1.2GHz) powered tab with 8gigs of internal storage, 512MB RAM, 7 inch screen and running ICS. The tab can be upgraded to Jelly Bean OS.

Fronix Star, a low cost tablet from Fronix Technology comes with 1.2 GHz processing power, 8GB internal storage and 512MB RAM. The ICS (Android 4.0) OS that is installed can be upgraded to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) all this for a price of Rs. 5,400.

The Fronix Star is light weight (330 grams) and slim (10.5 mm thickness). The Allwinner A13 (ARMv7) Cortex A8 processor powers this tab with a 1.2GHz frequency. These A13 powered tabs perform better than the Allwinner A10 processors and consumes less power. However HDMI port is missing on the A13 tabs.

Box Pack
Inside the box there is the tablet, user manual / warranty card, USB to micro USB cable for connecting with PC, OTG cable (the smaller one, used for connecting 3G dongle / pen drives etc.), earphones ( they are of a cheap quality) and the battery adapter (charger).

Design
There are two films the protective film that users have to remove and the finger print resistant film which really helps keep the screen clean and avoids finger print marks – however that film is not scratch resistant.

The 7 inch tab look great, it is sleek, got curved edges and with a black and white colour combination. The rear side has got a white glossy look and a part of it is with embossed design for a better grip. The power button and all the ports are placed on the right side and there are no extra buttons anywhere else.

fronix star review

There are no physical buttons even on front side. Well the ICS OS does allocate a dedicated space for navigational buttons placed at the bottom and hence physical buttons are not required.

Performance
The screen of size 7 inches with capacitive touch is smooth and responsive, the ICS works pretty smoothly. The Fronix Star tab comes with a lot of pre-loaded apps. There are the latest games and latest Bollywood music video clips. Apart from that there are some APK files (games) which you can installed as needed.

Useful apps like Adobe reader, Dolphin browser, flash player, Akdiko e-reader, Office Documents, yourtube and other Google services are also included.

Another view of fronix star low cost tablet

The RAM is 512MB and internal storage is 8GB of which around 1GB is allocated for apps storage and about 5GB as an internal SD storage. You can also use the micro SD slot to add card up to 32GB capacity.

I played some of the pre-installed HD games which were smooth – all credits to the Mali 400 GPU. There should not be a problem playing ShadowGun, ASPHalt and some other games which have performed well on the Mali 400 GPU.

You can use Skype for video chat using the front camera. Though the quality of the camera is not so great.

Benchmark
The quadrant benchmark score = 2250.
AnTuTu Benchmark score = 2703.

Battery performance
I charged the battery at full 100% and ran few video clips (1080p as well as 720p) in loop. Here are the results. (Videos in loop with 15% brightness / Wi-Fi Off).

TimeBattery Level (%)
6:46 – Video test started100
8:0577
10:1045
11:2726
11:49 Video test Ended20

The battery life seems pretty good with usage time of about 4 to 5 hours.

Fronix Star key features and specifications

  • Allwinner A13 (1.2GHz) with Mali 400 GPU.
  • ICS Android 4.0 with Jelly Bean upgrade (Android 4.1).
  • 512MB DDR3 RAM, 8GB internal storage and Micro SD card up to 32GB supported.
  • Wi-Fi, 3G (External dongle (WCDMA / EVDO / TD-SCDMA), G-Sensor, 3.5mm jack, 1080p playback, flash 10.3 and front 0.3MP camera.
  • 7 inch capacitive touchscreen with 5 touch points (resolution 800×480 pixels).
  • Lithium Po battery of 4000 mAh with usage time of more than 4 hours.

Fronix Star Review
The tab looks good and does a very good job. For connectivity there is Wi-Fi, you can also connect a compatible 3G dongle via the micro USB port using the OTG cable. This is similar to the other Allwinner A13 tablets but what I liked was the host of pre-loaded apps / games but most of all – it is Jelly Bean upgradable. The JB upgrade is mentioned on the box pack and probably within few months the update will be available. Tab price Rs. 5,400.

Hi Gogi,

any news about aurora ii ?
It’s been quite a time, since its release and no one has posted any reviews or unboxing video of the product!!!

I am trying to contact them through the phone numbers mentioned in their website but there is no response from their side.

How is fronix star as a product? Are there any issues in it?

Thanx

Hi Gogi,

I am seriously interested in buying a tablet somewhere around end of November. Recently , I have done enough research about budget tablets under 10k but quite frankly, none has amused me except for some that deliver an 'ipad' kind of look with average specifications. But after reading your review about Fronix star, the specifications of the tablet has concerned me for reserving a thought regarding its purchase. Also i went to their website and checked about Aurora II(which actually impressed me more) which will be launched soon with dual core and advanced specs. than Star…

So please guide me for a good purchase and also specify about Aurora II through a review containing the benchmark tests, overall performance , design quality (star looks better than aurora ? – need confirmation), etc.

I look forward to hear from you soon!

Thanx

Amartya

Thanx a lot Gogi!

Wammy desire’s design is cool but with a res. of 800X480 and the wickedLeak’s logo has turned me to focus on Aurora II.
How is the gaming experience of both the tablets – Desire & Aurora II ?

Is waiting for Aurora II justifiable ?

Eagerly waiting for your review!
Thanx

Hey,

Pls post a review about veedee e10.Seems a promising tab.

Pls tell me would you suggest wammy 7 or fronic star keeping in mind that i am a heavy gamer.(price difference doesnt matter)

Reply

gogi September 27, 2012 at 1:19 pm

If you have checked the review both the tabs Wammy 7 / Star can play games. The battery usage will be lower that what you get when watching movies – depends on the game. The Wammy 7 is with HDMI port. Also if you are buying the tab for gaming I would suggest go with 1GB RAM you can ask for it. Star is with A13 processor and Wammy with A10, only diff is the HDMI missing on A13, performance is better / heat up is less on A13.

Reply

abhinav September 27, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Thank you very much! Just one more thing, Do you think fonix after sales support is as good as wammy's? Also Please tell me what do you think about Veedee e10 for gaming and durability? Can any extra RAM be added to star to make it 1 gb somehow? Thanks again.

Reply

gogi September 28, 2012 at 6:38 pm

Abhinav, All of these tabs are good for gaming and durable, though the tabs come with 512MB you can ask for if they can customize it to 1GB. Better try calling each of these 3 and find the best quote.

Gogi, A new tablet by BSNL and Pent has been launched on Snapdeal. It has a Cortex A8 1.0 GHz processor and Mali 400 GPU and no HDMI (possibly A13 Soc) at just Rs 3999!

I think you should consider it

My father likes to play games like solitaire and other. currently he is playing it on PC but i am planning to buy him a tablet so that he can play it anywhere which is not the case with PC.

Also i want the tablet to have option

2. to play music , watch video and internet (for me).

Can u please suggest me a good budget tablet for the both options with keeping father's gaming option must.

Hitesh you can go with the Fronix Star or VeeDee D13 both are same hardware but with slightly different conf (memory). In fact both tabs are more than sufficient as per your usage listed above.

hitesh September 20, 2012 at 6:30 pm

Hi Gogi,

Thanks for the reply. Also I was thinking of going for a mini laptop instead of tablets then which are the best options, as my father will be more comfortable with mouse and keyboard option in laptop.

Dear Gogi,

I have made my father experience a touch screen of a tab and he is ok with it, so finally I have decided to go for tablet and it also suits my budget with netbook. What's better between fronix star and micromax funbook? also the important point for me to consider is the after sales service of the company, so based on this I need to decide between the two. What's your take between the two ?

Regards,

Hitesh

Reply

gogi September 24, 2012 at 4:57 pm

Hitesh, There is no difference between the hardware, the price is a bit different. But since you are more interested in after sales. I would suggest check out the service centers of Micromax and Fronix. If you are staying in Pune where Fornix is then go for it. Otherwise I think Micromax would the next choice. You can contact each of these companies and find out the nearest service center from your location.

Reply

hitesh September 24, 2012 at 11:02 pm

thanks for the reply.

At micromax site, it displays funbook, funbook alpha and funbook pro whereas on flipkart it has something called p250. So i am confused among all this.

Can u please tell me the actual on to buy an from where ?

Reply

gogi September 25, 2012 at 5:07 am

Hitesh its the same its model no. P250, but from Flipkart they are the best.

hitesh September 25, 2012 at 5:08 pm

With funbook out of stock, which are the other options under 6000 for mumbai ?

bsnl 701c , zync , fronix.

Reply

gogi September 25, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Avoid BSNL they are too slow for delivery / support, try Funbook, Zync, Fronix, Wickedkeak or Veedee.

hitesh September 25, 2012 at 5:25 pm

Hi,

Fronix service center is easily available in mumbai so can i go blindly with it among the choices mentioned ?

Thanks

Hitesh September 26, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Hi Gogi,

Finally , which to choose between fronix star and veedee e10 (veedee d13 is out of stock) ? both have their service centres in mumbai so that is not an issue.

Thanks

Dear Gogi sir as you said while reviewing Fronix Star tab video calling quality was not so great. What its mean. Is this tab isn't for video calling? Pls reply.

Reply

gogi September 15, 2012 at 2:10 am

Ayush, the front camera quality is the same what you find on smartphones. Now when you run skype on a big screen the other persons videos are not that clear. On smartphones it looks ok cause of the small screen, but on the tab it looks a bit different with blurry edges. Try viewing a small image of its original size on your PC and then zoom in to expand see what happens, that is exactly what I mean.
